has anyone run an AM3+ socket CPU on an 870a-based motherboard?

I'm hoping to install an FX-series CPU in a socket AM3 motherboard.

My current BIOS version is from November 2010 with support for AGESA 3.7.1.0, but there's a newer one from August 2011 that supports AGESA 3.7.1.2. Would I need the update?

Neither of those will work with an FX. The best you can do with 3.7.1.2 is a 6 core Phenom II.

You MIGHT be able to flash it with the BIOS from version 3.1. I did that with a GA-890GPA-UD3H 2.0 and was able to use an FX in it. There's a significant chance that you'll brick it, so I wouldn't recommend it unless you can pull the BIOS to reprogram it. The backup BIOS chip should save you, but it doesn't always successfully revert to the backup when the main BIOS is corrupted.
