I've been using my @home connection for awhile, but I need to upgrade to a larger hard drive -- and I'm not too keen on using Ghost or any program to make a copy of my old hard drive.

I like to start out fresh, so if you've re-installed your @home software -- ie the network card and cable software, and settings, please tell me what I need to write down so I can do it myself and not have to call for a $50-70 "professional" re-install....

Thanks much,
Uber

Don't install the @home software, it's crap and you don't need it. Just go to Network properties and write down the following:

IP
Gateway
Host & Domain
DNS Server

I wouldn?t let the @home guy install that software he just laughed and agreed it was junk. On my @Home connection the only thing needed is the Computer Name and the Work Group name under Identification in Network Properties. (of course after you set up your NIC and such).
But it doesn't hurt to have that info handy just incase.

One other thing, for a little added security unbind TCP/IP from any of the clients, i.e. Client for Microsoft Networks, Microsoft Family Login and from any services i.e. printer & file sharing, (if your not running a home network get rid of printer & file sharing altogether) The only thing TCP/IP needs to be bound to is the NIC for your connection to work. If your running a home network bind NetBEUI and TCP/IP to the NIC, but just NetBEUI to the clients and services, works great and it?s a little more secure.

There is no need for the @home software.... it just slows your computer down! Totally useless...

For me @Home service, I need to input the gateway, IP, submask, and DNS to work... but I don't need to put in the @Home username or workgroup... But I guess that depends on your configuration in your area... just go to Network Properties and copy down everything before you format and install your new HD...

Have Fun!

Another option is just call their customer service. I have called them on many occasions and they have told me what IP, Gateway, Host, Domain, DNS Server every time I have called. I have had to call them on separate occasions because I have lost my paperwork which has the info I need.

I agree with the concensus here the @home software is junk. Just write down your network settings or do a sceen shot of them. Install your OS and go at it.

All relative information to setting up your sepcific computer name domain, default gateway address --- etc. Is listed on the Yellow Carbon Copy of the @HOME reciept you had to sign when the tech was done setting up the machine.

As for the @HOME software, the guy who came didn't even ask if I wanted it --- when I commented about not wanting it he said he wasn't planning on installing it -- LOL --- I have heard it was a POS from many.... just read above.

(also -- mail & news ips are that sheet for those of us behind routers that have to do a name lookup on those ips to plug into our mail server fields instead of 'mail')

Goodluck, enjoy the fresh load --- they are one of a kind and quickly destroyed :)
