Has anyone tried to run DSL on a chip this slow??? or how about running windows 2000??? this is just an interesting idea of mine... LOL

And what is the highest recorded overclock for a pentium 200 MMX???

DSL should work on K5. Probably would work fine as well, webpages would be slow, but not because the K5 can't handle the bandwidth, it just couldn't handle all the Java(not sure if it can even do Java), page formatting, rendering, and what not. If you going to use one, I don't think Win2k would work, you'd be best using Linux.

I ran satellite broadband on a Pentium II 350 MMX without a problem. a K5 shouldn't have a problem. Dont know about the overclock thing.

A K5 is two generations behind the Pentium 2. The K6 was the Pentium's competition, and the K6-2 and K6-3 was the Pentium 2's competition. Then came the Athlon and the Pentium 3.

Ya, the k5 was basically a 486 IIRC.

well i got to tell all i am typeing this message on and old AMD K5 on DSL and running windows 2000... and i wanted to see what the highest overclock was for a pentium 200 MMX because i overclocked one to 300mhz windows stable...

and the K5 was a little more than just a super 486.. The K5 actually had a more advanced architechure than the pentium... it even has more in common with a pentium pro than a pentium...

The 5x86 I believe is a different chip that was designed by a different company AMD bought out... but no the AMD K5 was an all AMD Architecture... for more information about the K5 you can read the links I posted, If you really want to know about the K5 Processor. They are good links and should help explain the K5 for people that don't know much about it... I took interest in the old K5 and bought one off Ebay for a whopping $13? I got the later released chip the PR-133 version that operates at a stock speed of 100mhz and surprisingly it did pretty good running windows 2000 and DSL at that speed? and the best part about it is the chip I got was in near mint condition a near perfect specimen of a K5? I fell in love with it the first time I held it and looked at the little gem?LOL

A friend had a Pentium 233MMX that I overclocked to 290MHz for him, reasonably stable.

The "5x86" designation was used by a few different companies to promote a "higher than typical 486" performance from a CPU. AMD used it, and I think perhaps Cyrix and NexGen also used it. Coincidentally AMD bought NexGen and used their upcoming product as the K6 CPU. The AMD version of the 5X86 was the 5x86-75, basically they said it was fifth generation performance equivalent to a Pentium 75. Most people "in the know" basically called it the 486-133 since it ran at 133MHz and used a 486 motherboard. I think it had some "Pentium-like" features in the core which prompted AMD to use the 5x86 designation, kind of like how Cyrix used the 486 designation on some CPUs that worked on 386 motherboards because of some "486-like" features (like having L1 cache). Some people overclocked these to 160MHz.

The K5 CPUs were released as two types, first was one that was "rated" at the exact MHz, second was "rated" at a higher PR number. These CPUs were fairly decent performers and could be overclocked a tad. My K5-90 was clocked to 100MHz and my K5-166 (133MHz) was clocked to 200 (166MHz). OMG, I can remember playing Diablo and Starcraft on mine! Starcraft would tend to overheat my overclocked 166 so I'd have to drop it down to default.

Thank you AMDrulZ for taking us down memory lane. I can remember one friend who really liked his Cyrix 6x86. Anyone remember the Cyrix MediaGX?

the reason i asked about the overclocked pentium was because i got a pentium 200 MMX to post an run windows 2000 at 300mhz... a full 50% overclock on an old pentium...

i have acess to a lot of old cpu's and motherboard's i also have both of those cyrix chip's...

i thought about overclocking the old K5 but i just don't have the heart to do it... i wouldn't want to damage a rare cpu like the K5 esp.. one in the near mint condidtion like the one i got...

i will most likely try to overclock the old pentium to 333mhz tonight sometime.. i don't think it can but heck i will give it a try anyway... LOL

I had an old Packard Bell 486. It had a DX(?) 66mhz processor. I ended up running a K5 133mhz upgrade (made me the equal of a Pentium 75 it said on the box). I also added a whopping (at the time) 16MB of Ram for a total of 20MB. The PC ran Doom, Doom II, and Rise of the Triad smooth as silk. :D

Who could like that piece of $hit? My friend had it and it was painfully slow. He eventually managed to get his money back, though...

I actually fired up my old Pentium 200MMX today. It's fairly souped up for an old Pentium, since it now houses a Seagate 7200.7 40GB in DMA mode, 128MB SDRAM, TNT2 M64 32MB and a Voodoo 2 12MB. I would run SLI if the CPU hadn't been so weak...

Anyway, the main reason for these old computers feeling terribly slow is usually the harddrives. It was a night and day difference when I installed the 7200RPM Seagate drive. The extra RAM also did it's thing. All in all, it's certainly good enough to surf the web with (although Firefox is a little slow).

As for overclocking the 200MMX: I tried that with my computer, but the motherboard doesn't seem to support higher frequencies. It's a shame, since the chip seems fairly good. I have it undervolted to like 2.3V and there still hasn't been any crashes.

I have overclocked the pentium 200 MMX it is an excelent overclocker 50% to be at 300Mhz... not bad for such an old cpu... i still love my K5 more than the pentium though maybe because there is still a gagillion pentium 200s out there...

You don't necessarily need higher frequencies to overclock the CPU, just set it to a higher multiplier. Yep, these CPUs were from BITD when they weren't multiplier locked. Indeed I had two Pentium MMX CPUs (lost during my move last year) and one of them was a remarked chip, meaning it was a Pentium 166MMX but "marked" as a 200 by some third party. It was pretty easy to do since the CPUs were unlocked and they were sold at speeds of 166/200/233MHz (a 266MHz made it into notebooks) but pretty much all of them could run at 233MHz or higher.

well i tried overclocking the old pentium 200 MMX today.. but the highest i could get it was to 300mhz like befor so as it looks the highest overclock for a pentium 200 MMX is 300mhz with a slight over volt from 2.8 to 2.9 volts... i overclocked the K5 to 125mhz MAX at the stock voltage of 3.5v thats the highest the board will go...

Ya, I've also had a 200mmx@300. I had an atx Soyo that used SDram and put a nice copper cooler on it. With a big power supply and a decent pci video card, with modern 7200 hdd, it was pretty fast :).

yea it was kind of odd haveing the BIOS say pentium 300 and it was pretty fast for a pentium...

My pentium 120 laptop w/80mb ram, win95 and firefox web browser works on my network with 3mb cable. It is super slow though

Was it a Super 7 board? Those Pentium MMX CPUs were made for a 66MHz FSB but on a Super 7 board if the CPU will run at 300MHz, then you can run 3x100MHz with some CAS 2 PC100 and a fast HDD plus the fastest video card that can still run on AGP 2X voltage (1.5v). That would make for a strangely decent machine... of sorts.

I threw a 200mmx chip away. In fact, I cleaned my drawer out a couple of years ago. Anything less than 600mhz went in the trash (I kept my old 650mhz Althlon... why, I have no idea).

LOL!
