Just came out on Steam today, looks like X-com quite a bit. Read some of the reviews on the non gold version and seems the gold version took care of some of their largest complaints.

Just curious if anyone here has played it and has any input.

Is that the original UFO: somename (I know ones have come after it, but haven't played them)? If so ripped off X-com straight up pretty much. I'd rather just play x-com again than that game although it is decent.

If it's what I'm thinking of, it wasn't a ripoff, it was an homage because some guys figured that since no one was bothering to update X-Com, they'd do it themselves.

It wasn't particularly good. You just can't go home again, I guess. :)

What's the difference between a homage and a rippoff? I'd delineate on whether they charge money for it or not : p

Good point, and good question... I guess it depends on whether the original creators would give it their blessing? In this case I think they'd appreciate the effort, at least.

I do remember this game. Looks like they've made some improvements, but their earlier release didn't -feel- like X-Com. Maybe you have to actually be in the 90s to really appreciate X-Com, hehehe.

Edit: Though, if you want to play X-Com with updated graphics, this is the best you're gonna get, so spend the $17 if ya want it.

I loved x-com and was excited about this but if I remember correctly the deal breaker was no destructable enviorments. Which is odd because the x-com you could level everything if you wanted.

Hmmm, the "new" features on the Gold edition in Steam look suspiciously like the features from Bmans mod. Did the developers incorporate his mod into the game and call it Gold?

What the heck? Is there an official patch/mod for the original game?

Interesting - it looks like Bman was hired by the developer to work on UFO: ET 2.

They got his permission to incorporate his mod into the update to UFO: ET. Discussion going on here:

Back on topic: The game was pretty much unplayable & lame when first released. The modding community and official patches really saved the game. Fully modded, this game is much better than the crappy UFO Aftershock/Afterlight series. I'm not sure what all is improved in the "gold" version yet.

Great to see that Bman's mod is now part of an official Steam release! It looks a lot different from the original release... As someone mentioned in the thread you linked, Ganeedi, I might buy it just to show support and maybe generate interest in a UFO2 release one day.

Interesting.

See I liked that UFO series from Altar games and I found UFO: ET to be quite lame. The tactical screen was ruined by extremely amateur graphics of bloated characters who walk like they have no joints. XCom graphics were far better. But admittedly I never played a mod with it, just the vanilla game.

Do the mods fix the embarrassing graphics and animations?

I played it. Maybe my expectations from playing the original on my Amiga 500 was too high, but I was really disappointed.

Think I had it on my HD a few days before I uninstalled it again.
