For me, growing up in Asia where arcades with hundreds of cabinets were prevalent was a lot of fun. I remember SF2' explosive success would start to dominate all arcades.
Few years after SF2, some cabinets featured HACKED SF2. They're exactly the same game as SF2 but with few color distortion/swapping on some characters and severely altered game settings. This enabled for some hilarious battles and readjusting to the new messed-up style of play. I know it wasn't just one cabinet because throughout the different towns or neighbors I've roamed as a kid, all of their respective arcades had the same hacked settings.
The HACKED version allowed for:
*a change in the number of projectile you can have on the screen. It's one per character as we know it but the hacked version had it increased to 50-100. The shooting time for hadoken was greatly reduced and also the projectiles' speed. You can spam like 20-30 Hadoukens on the screen.
*Guile could also perform sonic boom, but the charge delay was eliminated so you can just shoot tens of them just by performing Back, Forward + punch.
*Blanka's electric move would last for 15 seconds and it would also force Blanka to slide towards the opponent at a persistent speed. This meant, if you block it, you take about 60% in block damage because the move would last so long and you can't be pushed away since Blanka is moving towards you at the same time.
*Ryu/Ken's Soryuken (Rising dragon punch) leaves a trail of Hadoukens... I clearly remember as a kid... if you do the move with weak punch, it fills the sky with the Hadokens in a vertical line... if you do it with a strong punch, it creates one concentrated volley made up of 15-20 Hadoukens, homing to the opponent at a fast speed. Surely getting hit by this meant instant dizziness.
*and much more for all characters...
Am I the only one played this? I'm only 25 now. I wonder if it was just an Asian thing or it ever happened in the States....
