Physical dimensions of the viewable screen. Most 5:4 monitors are 17/19" LCD, most CRT monitors are 4:3. Widescreen LCD are mainly 16:9 or 16:10.

Its a ratio, it doesn't dictate the width of the display...only the ratio between the width and the height.

Horizontal resolution is given first, therefore a 5:4 screen would be 5 units across by 4 units tall. So, if the "units" were 1 foot, the 5:4 display would be 5 feet across by 4 feet tall.

1280x1024 is only useful for LCD's of that native resolution. I'm on a CRT, so I use 1280x960.

They all have that instead of 12x9 in their standard resolutions list. I think 12x10 was the largest resolution that could fit in the 4MB framebuffer on ancient video cards, so it's a holdover from those days. Either that or the manufacturers simply suck at math and think it's 4:3.

Dell P991 says 1024x768 or 1280x1024 at 85 Hz
NEC FE991 Recommended resolution: 1280x1024 @ 85 Hz

These are some of the highest end 19" CRT's. Actually I never saw a 19" that recommended 1280x960.

These are some of the highest end 19" CRT's. Actually I never saw a 19" that recommended 1280x960.

All 3 of those pages dont even list 1280x960 as one of the supported resolutions, which is of course BS since I never saw a CRT that could do 12x10 but not 12x9. I'm guessing either they never bothered to do the math because at first glance 1280x1024 appears to be the correct choice over 1280x960, or there's some other reason that I dont know of.

I don't see why anyone would want that crap when you could run 1280x960 or 1360x1024. Of course the LCDs are almost always 12x10 for some reason, but on a CRT I find the 4:3 are better looking plus 12x10 seems like tunnel vision after using widescreen.

i dunno about the other but i ran my p991 at 1600x1200x85hz and my 19" diamondtron (mitsubishi) compaq at 1600x1200x85hz

12x10 seems to be 19in. LCD standard.

12x9 seems to be 19in. CRT standard (even though those links said 12x10).

5:4 monitors a squarer than 4:3 monitors right?

I run 12x10 on a crappy CRT I'm on now. It's my secondary monitor. I tried 12x9 but it doesn't look right.

It's a KDS XF7b btw.

Well whatever "Recommended resolution" means. Maybe it has the best image quality and longevity at its recommended.

Something I've noticed too, and will probably never figure out. I guess the manufacturers are just that stupid. I used to have a 21" Sony CRT, and the recommended res. was 12x10 I ran it at 12x9, which always looked correct, 12x10 was of course stretched horizontally, sinced 12x10 is meant for more "square" monitors.
