It is common for emulation because the pixel resolution is so small and that the "effects" have alot of dead space to work with so you arn't losing graphical information while gaining atmospheric effect. Videos on the other hand is a battle to try and capture and preserve what information we can cull from the original medium (when refering to viewing old videos on old TVs) because every bit of detail helps.
