Has anyone joined a CD club before?

My wish list for CDs keeps growing and growing, and at $10-15 per CD, I can't afford to buy a whole bunch at once. CD clubs seem like a decent deal (BMG offers "12 for the price of 1", plus shipping of course), but I've always been a little leery of them. I've heard rumors that there are all kinds of hidden charges and that it's difficult to cancel your membership, but are those true? Can anyone offer some insight?

BMG is much, much less evil than Columbia House. They have a "sale" every month where you can get 3 CDs for about $28-30 shipped even while buying the 1 CD needed to fulfill your obligation.

They will switch you to "no reply needed" for the monthly new CD if you ask them once you've bought the 1 CD. You can also go to the website to order or just look up CD codes for CDs not in the monthly mag, including other genres like classical.

You might get more free CDs if you join on your own rather than having a friend or website refer you, check before joining.

I love columbiahouse. Over the last 3 years I have averaged $8/DVD with their help.
Their customer service is probably the WORST on the planet, but I don't mind, so long as I can buy DVD's at $7.50 a piece.

EDIT: Ohhhhh!! CD not DVD
I see now how it helps to read the title before posting in a thread

It's a good way to build up a collection of back titles at ~$4/disc. It usually takes 6-12 months after the retail release for albums to become available. They don't have some of the mega-artists like Beatles, Stones, Floyd, etc., and if your tastes run toward independent labels you're out of luck. You can browse through and see what they have.

There aren't any hidden charges, as long as you understand that shipping is a total ripoff and the way they guarantee they won't lose money on any customer. They charge nearly $3 to ship each CD via media mail. The rule with all these places is buy the minimum required, quit, and rejoin. They'll throw all kinds of "deals" at you to try to convince you to buy more than the minimum, but without fail it will only raise your average cost per disc. They also offer monthly selections that automatically ship 3-4 weeks later, you need to stay on top of that and cancel them before they ship and bill you. Cancelling the membership is easy enough and can be done online.

BMG is the better CD club these days, the selection is better and their introductory 12 for 1 deal is better than what CH is willing to offer (they used to have some great coupon codes but they've been pulled). If you join BMG, you won't do any better for yourself by signing up through a referral, although the referer will get 5 free ones.

It also helps to read the post, as he mentioned CD there about 3 times also ;)

And to answer your question, I used to belong to a lot of clubs. BMG Music, Columbia house music, DVD, and even columbia house games at one time. I didn't have any difficulty with any of them. I just got the free stuff, paid full price for the ones I needed to, and then canceled.

I did Columbia House for tapes many years ago.

A couple years ago, I signed up for BMG and had 6 people sign up under me. I got 4 "free" CDs per person.

After taxes and shipping fees, I averaged around $3.20 or so per CD.

Yeah, I've joined both Columbia House and BMG at least a dozen times in my life. Started back in the 8-track days, then into cassettes, and finally for CDs. It's a great way to accumulate music as long as you do what you mentioned. Join, buy the minimum, quit, rejoin, so forth and so on.

Oh yeah, like DaveSimmons said, you should try to use one of their best offers, like Buy 1 Get 3 free. That way you pick up 3 additional "free" (0.00+2.79 S/H) selections along with the one required full price purchase, driving that average cost per disc down even more. They won't give that to you right away, they'll make you wait a few months hoping you'll bite on something more profitable for them.

A couple months ago I saw a Buy 1 Get 1 Free No S/H, which is actually less per disc than Buy 1 Get 3. It seems counterintuitive but that's the way the math works out.

Hardly anyone talks about CD clubs online, I know of a single thread at dvdtalk (hot deals forum) specifically about them, compared to an entire forum there dedicated to DVD club deals. Better than nothing I guess.

I joined BMG Music to get my free iPod

But I love it. Just bought two CDs during the last sale. They always have good sales going at least once a month and the more you buy the more music points you earn which means more CDs. I don't know though, quitting and rejoining sounds a lot better.

Cool, I'll check out BMG's selection and see if they have the CDs I'm looking for.

Thanks for the input guys!
