Neither of my 98>me upgrades went well. Tho I've had friends say they've done it. I ended up doin mine clean. Wasn't fun migrating apps back.

I suppose I should mention that after 2 weeks I formatted that partiton and reinstalled 98SE. ME was too buggy and I don't care for IE 5.5; these problems may be a function of an overlay rather than a clean install.

For what you get, Millenium Edition is ridiculously slow. There are a few more options than in 98, and far more annoying things that aren't in 98, plus it is much much slower (excluding the quicker boot time).

Windows 98 is blisteringly fast on a 350 with 96MB RAM. Millenium Edition makes this system look completely obsolete, far more so than Windows 2000 Professional in fact.

I installed 98 on top of ME once. :Q

I had a ME installation and I just went to DOS (boot disk) and installed 98 on top of it... Needless to say, I didn't keep that setup for too long. It was horrible.

98: Extremely fast, good for the average Joe.
ME: Slow, worthless for all, NOT "the gaming OS", FAR from it.
2K: Excellent stability, slightly slower than 98, but very much worth the move depending on the user.

Installed the full retail version on top of Win98SE, had no problems (my proc. was oc'ed the whole time)

And I really dont see this "slowdown" you guys talk about - my system runs even faster except that ICQ loads 1 second slower. (C2-566@952, 128 MB PC100, BH6 1.0, Maxtor 13.6 7200 ATA66, Maxtor 20.0 5400 ATA66)

I installed Me over 98 but as soon as I did the cdrom was no longer detected in ME. It workes in BeOS and the Bios sees it. So i know that it works. However Me does not see it. Other than that it is fine so far on a 300 with 72meg ram

I upgraded from 98SE to ME on my two home systems last about 4 weeks ago. No problems at all. After working with ME for a month though I'm really underwhelmed. Time to make the move to 2000.

I installed over 98 SE, no problems. I'm dual booting with Win 2K and have to say that I only use ME for games, 2K blows it away for everything else! AFA ME vs 98SE and gaming, I don't see a big difference. ME is better online, it's almost as fast as 2K connecting and d/l etc. The IE 5.5 in ME is actually an older version, if you run ME, d/l the newest IE 5.5, and the same with NMedia Player, in MPuse auto-update to get the most current, it's much better.

Upgraded Win98SE to WINME with no problems except that it was trying to give me a second keyboard. The problem was fixed after I deleted the two keyboards and restarted.

I do see some errors and illegal function warnings more often. Actually a lot more often than with WIN98. Plus I have a "start menu" problem that I can't turn off which is in another post. The last issue is I can't permanantly delete my configsys file or autoexec file without them returning.

I installed ME on top of 98SE and have yet to see any issues. Be advised the machine I did this on is a networked secondary PC that is basically used as a repository for MP3 files, so I really don't push it a whole lot.

I did a straight install of ME simply because for whatever reason, and whatever method ME uses for USB, my CDRW USB drive does not work if I upgrade the install from 98 to ME. Straight install works just fine though.

After 2k, I rarely use WinME. FIrst of all, since I have 2 NIC cards, ME detects my main card as my internal network card, so I can't host games. 2k picks the correct one. I don't have any games that I actually play that will not work in 2k. I use ME so little that I didn't even have things like winzip installed. I boot to winME to use Fireburner for ISO distros in Linux, and once Fireburner works with my burner in 2k I don't know what I'll even do in WinME.

If your 98SE is up and running don't do it. I did though and experienced no problems. Always keep in mind: Never touch a running system. There are some pretty cool features in it but without backup you shouldn't dare.

I installed WinME over top of 98SE and it installed flawlessly, no problems at all. In fact it was one of the simplest most trouble free OS installs I've ever done. Having said that though, I know of a few people who have nothing but horror stories about installing ME over top of 98SE. For some people ot goes great for other it doesnt work at all.
I've heard a lot of people talk bout how slow it s and how much resources it uses but I havent found that to be the case. It seems a bit slower than 2000, which is in itself a touch slower than 98SE. No big differences in speed or memory/resource usage.

I'm running it on a Celery 433 @ 612MHz, Voodoo Banshee, 320MB RAM, 5400RPM Fujitsu HDD

Nickdakick, if I followed your advice I'd still be using DOS 5.0, lol
=====================================================================

I installed ME over Win98 Original. On the first try I found out that MSN 2.5 can't be installed over with MSN 5.0. What a mess.

Next time around I deleted MSN 2.5 before installing ME and my system is now stable and fast. All my old Dos aps run without trouble.

Running a PIII 600 @ 800 with 256 meg ram.

It will more likely work without a hitch, but it is always better to due a clean install with a new operating system. Either way though. Good luck!

I found a very interesting thing about ME. There is a backup feature similar to GO-BACK that saves all kinds of settings, etc. everytime anything changes on your machine. It's nice to be able to go back to the system configuration of a few days ago if you screw something up today, but it really sucks performance. I haven't run any benchmarks, but after disabling this feature, my system seems to be just as fast as it was with win98.

Only benefit I found other that prettyness is my cable internet speed. It could be a very odd coincidence, but with win98 I usually tested out at between 800kbps and 1000kbps with an occasional 1200kbps every so often on the MSN cable speed test page. Since I upgraded(clean install), I now range from 1200kbps to 1500kbps, and haven't seen anything in the 3 digit speeds! It's possible that my cable company did some upgrading, but when I asked, they didn't know of anything going on. Of course that's why they work for the cable company...
