Ive been using keyless entry since '99, the only way i can see someone locking themselves out is if they are using their trunk and lock their car and drop the keys in their trunk.

Has anyone here with keyless entry locked themselves out of their car? And if so how?

I'd have to leave my window open a crack, lock the door, then toss it in. If I close my door when it's locked, it'll unlock. Only ways to look to the door from the outside are with the remote, or by sticking my key in the door and turning it, or by reaching my arm in the window.

My wife did it, left the keys in her purse at a funeral when we got out at the graveside and my son hit the lock(out of habit) inside as they were getting out of the car. Luckily we had onstar and I called them with a cell phone and they unlocked it from a satellite.

Was pretty cool actually, the car was second in line and blocking the procession and all the old folks were standing around it trying to figure out what to do and I was about 100ft away talking to onstar on the cellphone when they unlocked it and they all steped back and went Ohhhhh!

Besides being able to lock it up by pressing the button inside the door as your getting out(locking yourself out), I've found another oddity about my locking system. If some one inside the car locks it with the button while your outside with the remote, it disables the remote until the car is unlocked from the inside. A feature great feature for disgruntled spouses or mischeivious children.:)

My old car had a bug or something where if you left the car running, even if you made sure to unlock the door when you got out, it would still automatically lock the door after a minute. Either you had to turn off the auto-locking feature (which I did), or leave the door open with the car running.

I was way out in the middle of nowhere driving between Burns OR and Ontario OR. I had to stop and use a rest stop restroom, and I forgot all about this and left he car running (it was not long after I got the car). I came back, and the car was running, but all the doors were locked. No cell phone service, no cars driving by, and nothing around to try slipping in the window to unlock the door. I eventually had to chuck a rock through the back passenger window.

The truck I have now has keyless entry and auto-locking doors, but not that problem where it would lock itself no matter what after a minute.

I have a 2007 Ford F250 with keyless entry. I keep the fob on the same keyring as the key, so when I get out of the truck while it's running, I have to be very careful. It has locked me out several times. I carry a seperate key with me because of this.

Ford's whole system of warnings on that truck is messed up, it beeps so much at me, I just ignore them all.

I did the exact thing the OP said

My car's keyless entry lets you open the trunk w/o unlocking the car. One time I was putting stuff in and i set my keys down in the trunk and when I closed the trunk i realized i just locked myself out.

Yeah, it can be done. All you need to do is lock the car and misplace the keyfob or leave it in the car.

Fortunately, my car came with a plastic key that you can stick in your wallet. It's come in handy once or twice.

My 1989 K-5 Blazer had the same problem. Except mine happened in a self car wash while degreasing the engine. I pulled into the spot, opened the door and stepped out. As I shut the door I saw and heard the door pin lock. Crap. I called for help and then degreased my engine.

New car is a Toyota Avalon and you cannot lock the doors with the key in the ignition. You can set the keys down in the car and lock it, but I never lock it without the fob. I also never close the trunk without first touching my keys in my pocket.

Almost locked myself out in my older 96 maxima. Left the keys in the trunk and closed the trunk. Luckily, the door was open and I could pop the trunk.

on my new G35, There is no way I can lock the keys inside the car. First, it has keyless start, so I never take the keys out of my pocket. Also, the car will NOT lock whenever the remote keys are inside the car (tested this....great feature).

My old boss drove an F350 and never wore his seatbelt... I often heard the beeping over the phone.

I don't see the connection between keyless entry and locking yourself out of your car. You can only use a key to lock the door from the outside of the car so if your using a key you can not lock yourself out.

My old car didn't have keyless entry, and I could lock it after I opened the door and it wouldn't automatically unlock when I shut the door. I did it in one fluid motion - pull door handle, then hit the lock button. I did it so fast that when someone else was in my car their door usually ended up unlocked because they opened it after I locked the doors.

My 2007 Altima's got the same features. Also, if you toss the keyfob in the trunk and shut the trunk it'll open and make a long continuous beep until you remove the keyfob and shut the trunk.

 I've got an 04 Maxima that I love but the new Altimas are very nice rides.

So what do you do whenever someone is coming to carjack you? :D

Same with my Altima, it refuses to lock if it detects the keys (the fob, technically there's no real "key" unless you pull it out of the fob). It won't work properly in some places such as the glove compartment or other places that help conceal the keys from the sensor.

Also, where did the term "fob" come from anyway? It's such an odd way of referring to the uhhh key chain car thing?

I think it'll lock if you're still in the car (the car has pressure sensitive seats... at least on the passenger's side I know it does). I've never really tested this, since I just lock the car using the button on the driver's handle as I'm leaving.

I've left my keys in the car before and locked it. Now I keep a spare key hidedn on the outside of the car in case it happens again. I can lock the car via the keyfob but I never do. When I press the lock button inside the car with the door open, it waits for the door to close and then has a 7 second delay before it actually locks the car.

I am often worried that I'll drop my keys in the boot of my 3 series and slam it shut, yeah. This is because if you lock the car and the boot is open it defers the lock till the boot is closed.

FYI: boot=trunk, not re-writing that.

Did the trunk thing, 50$ later and now I keep a spare key in my wallet.

I also lock the doors from the inside before getting out, force of habbit. This is my first car with keyless entry/locks.

I've had a keypad on the drivers side door of my last 2 cars. I typically leave the keys in the console.

guys the way to do it is to turn on your car, roll down the window, close the door, turn off your car. now, with your keys in the car lock it. Now if all of the new toyotas have the first door auto windows rolling all the way up so pull on the window roller and it will go strait up. BUT MAKE SURE NOT TO OPEN UP THE DOOR IN ANY OF THE STEPS. DECEPTICONS OUT!:biggrin::biggrin::biggrin::biggrin::biggrin::biggrin::biggrin::biggrin::biggrin::biggrin::biggrin:

My Jeep ignores the lock button on the door if the key is in the car. I would have to close the door, and use the key. Except the key is stored in the fob...
