I read about it in an article on arstechnica. From what i understand, it is an attempt to bring back the Opera experience. Now, I've never been an Opera user myself, so I don't know what to expect. But the article says it for power users, and provides a lot of control and flexibility, just like the original Opera.

First thoughts- Interface looks good, pretty rad, reminds slightly of Opera, specially the Speed Dial thing.

It's in alpha right now, so might be unstable for some. Memory usage is really high, and it has multiple processes, just like Chromium. This kinda disappoints me. The way it was hyped by the developers, I was thinking they had developed an entire new engine, from the scratch. But still, pretty good effort.

Gonna try it and see how i like it.

To me it looks just like opera which doesn't offer bookmarks from a drop down menu like ie or ff.

It's still in early development. I anticipate it'll add those features in the future. It's a project worth watching for fans of the old Opera. The 12.x series is becoming obsolete, so they'll have to switch to something. This may be a good choice when that time comes.

was Opera ever any good?
because as far as i remember, when Opera was around, Chrome and Firefox were already offering every feature ever, with Chrome going more for speed, and FF for plugins n control.
also .. do we need a new browser? no real complains with chrome .. (in a pinch, even IE works well these days)

The old Opera was a great browser, and innovated many of the features you see today in Firefox et al. The main reason I didn't use it was it's proprietary software. If not for that, I would have used it as a secondary browser on my main machine, and as a portable app on a thumb drive due to all the features it had in one package.
