I saw an article on it in maxim and was wondering what its like. Sounds interesting. Maxim said they ordered some even though its illeagel but how did it pass customs?

Oh and if you dont know what it is I found this place on google.

It's not all illegal. There are different strengths, som eare legal, some are not. I know a store that stocks it on the shelves (Not in the US though)

The trouble is, the stong stuff is enough to kill you, while the weak stuff is less potent than Vodka.

No actually the alcohal in it will kill you. If you read through the link i posted it clearly states that the achohal in it would kill you be fore you could ever get enough in you to kill you. Unless you just has straigh worm wood extract oil or whatever. That will kill you because it is poiseness, but it isnt absinthe.

At one of my brothers parties last year they had a bottle, cost him quite a bit....it was green....I smelt it and did not feel well after having a deep whiff....I ended up drinking 60% proof Black Vodka anyway....and was ill...foolish of me.

But my brother and his mates drunk some of that stuff...I think it was 80% 😕:Q...none of them felt well or got up before mid afternoon after that...

If you are gonna try it, use caution and only do 1 or 2 shots....then you'll be conked...make sure you have water....some kind of antacids or something at the ready.

I've had it. Have it at the end of your drinking night, or you'll have an early night. So far it's been the only thing that's put beyond my usual happy drunk state. Makes vodka taste like water. 😛 It's one of the few shots that are limited at the bar, ie bars will only let you have 1 or 2 tops.
 
Had it, and no I didn't cut my ear off like Van Gogh.. 😀 They don't make it as strong as they used to supposedly. I guess the new stuff is weak as hell by the old standards.

Not really AFAIK. There are/were small amounts of psychoactive compounds in real absinthe, but by most accounts the hallucinations were brought on by a lifetime of hardcore alcohol abuse and extreme drunkeness via the absinthe (it's about 60-70% alcohol by volume...it will fsck you up). To ingest enough of the stuff for the hallucinogens to take effect, you'll probably already be passed out.

You can still get the real stuff from Spain if you want to. They'll ship it to the US labeled as "spice oil" or similar.......at least that's what I've heard. 😉

yeah, ive had it in prague and it wasnt nearly all it was hyped to me to be. but to hallucinate on it would be the same as to hallucinate on any other alcohol: you'd have to ingest so much you'd be blacked out (at best) beforehand.
 
Absinthe tastes like ass. It's nasty and I don't see how anyone ever thought to drink this crap. The name itself means "undrinkable". Bitter, nasty sh!t. I had it in Spain; wasted good money on a bottle of that crap. Give me a joint and a bottle of tequila and I'm happy. Absinthe? I'd rather drink a bucket of vomit.
 
had it...no one i had it with had any hallucinations...and my friends have had it a couple of times...

just an expensive (usually) way to get drunk

The real stuff is. The stuff you can get here in the US is basically just anise vodka.

 
got some in my apartment right now... think it was smuggled over from europe... the real stuff of the absinthe bars in paris a century ago had a lot more juice to it than the stuff nowadays.
 
I was under the impression that it was a green liqour distilled from wormwood, around 130 proof or so. Illegal in half the countries in Europe including that in which it was invented, also illegal to import to the states AFAIK. I have a buddy in NJ that ordered some and it got through customs, however I've never tried it.
 
ok, i was curious just like you. there are two kinds of absynthe, one with wormwood extracts (called thujone) and one without. both of them are green hard alcohols that taste like black licorice only ten times as strong. to get the real stuff, you have to go to an eastern european country like hungary or the like as they do not sell the wormwood variety in spain, england or france to my knowledge. the hallucinations only happen when the thujone interacts with alcohol and it is not dangerous when drank occaisionally. supposedly, most of the great artists and writers of the late 19th century were addicted to the stuff

my friend brought me back an airline sized bottle from the czech republic that had thujone and i drank the entire thing, then had a forty of king cobra and didnt see sh-t. go figure.
