Has anyone here taken their computer as hand luggage on a plane?

My dad needs to take a computer out of country, and he says he needs to pay a tax on it....has anyone here done this before? I just want to know if you have to pay taxes or not, and if they'll let him through.

EDIT: I mean PC, not notebook

It won't - or at least shouldn't - pass security. I've taken a desktop through checked in luggage before though.

Depending on the country he may or may not be able to get out of it. Where's he going?

If it's England I think the tax is on the monitor, not the computer. (Monitors count as TVs because people used to convert them in order to get out of paying that yearly BBC fee... or something like that)

I have taken some ram, video card, cpu, and hard drives on a plane before, but that was a domestic flight. No problems at all, no taxes, just told the guys at the metal detector that I had some hard drives (aka chunks of metal) coming through. I actually got in trouble for my notebook which I put in the bin wrong. Hehe I don't know if that helped, since you are taking it out of the country.

he's going to israel....it's for friends we have over there, but i don't know if they'll believe him if he says he's just bringing inportant info over there while he's there

Tying to be shady on a plane? Smart. 😛

I've never been stopped and asked, I've carried a mini-tower 3 or 4 times to Japan and back no problems. I'm currently putting together a Shuttle to take with me to Denmark. How is it any different from carrying a laptop around?
