Has anyone here purchased a Hertz Rental Car?

If anyone hear has purchased an ex-Hertz Rental Car, how often was the the oil/filter changed on the vehicle? Also, what brand and grade of oil and filter was used?

Thanks,
Michael

i would never buy a rental car, i know how people drive them because well, i've rented a few. oil changes should be the least of your worries.

Expect the maintenance and repair record to have be perfect. The warranty will by law be fully intact (for the remaining months/mileage). Don't think that every renter goes "Days of Thunder" on rental cars. They don't. Most people will just drive a rental car normally (as rental cars are typically pretty bland to begin with). Usually, they're good deals on well-maintained cars, kinda like a police auction, but you'll be buying a bland boring fleet rental car.

I agree 100% with Vic. Even the occassional hard driver will not seriously destroy anything. Then again, your natural instincts tells you to avoid any sports cars (G35, Mustang, etc) or cars that people purposely rent to have fun with. Most family sedans are rented for daily transportation while their own car is unavaliable.

As for buying one, I'm not. I asked this question out of curiosity.

Mike

I have purchased TWO previous rental cars from Hertz. Both were maintianed well, and all records were kept. 60k miles later (one each) and neither has given me any headaches.

dude, i would NEVER buy a rental car.

i remember the one i had when my car was in the shop. I was pulling the e-brake at every corner. haha, i even took off with the e-brake totally on to listen to the rear wheels scream as i took off.

i'm suprised the car didn't blow up by the time i was done with it.

I have a former AVIS rental car. 2004 Cavalier w/ auto, pw, pl, pm, AM/FM/CD, it's great. Had 18,000km's when I bought it and we're up around 40k now. No issues thus far.

What year/make/model were they? How often was it serviced?

That's low mileage for a rental. Here in the US, they typically have 20-25,000 miles on them before they're retired.

They cost about $10-$11,000 around here, so I guess that it'd probably cost you 14 or 15,000 CDN?

Yup, I bought a 2005 hyundai elantra with 10,200 on the clock. I've had no problems with it whatsoever(it did get some nasty hurricane damage though) the car runs great, the warranty on hyundai is great(60k miles), Ive had no problem with the car whatsoever, the sales people are friendly and they show you all the records of the car, everything even like a car wash is recorded.

Yeah, it was quite a low mileage. I think the fleets here were getting upgraded to Pontiac Pursuits/Cobalts, thus the early sell-off.

I think we paid $12k+tax

I'd never ever touch a rental car. Everyone beats the ****** out of those cars... hell someone took a herz neon and threw 150 shot of NOS on it to get it into 12s.... returned the car afterwards.

those people are so the minority, that you needn't worry.

When on business trips with others with rental cars, we use the e-brake for our entertainment, and try and push each other through stop signs. (when noone is coming from the cross street of course) Its also fun to run them in lower gears and rev them higher than I would ever dream in my own car. However, these days I drive them a little nicer.

To hell with the maintenance history, I would avoid them simply because of all the people who smoke, spit, wipe boogers on the seat, etc in rental cars.

*shrug*

I used to work for a rental car company and there is no way I'd ever buy a previous rental vehicle. Sure, you could get a good one but I know how those cars are abused...hell, I've abused some of them myself. People just don't give a crap about rental cars.

I once drove around in a Chevy Monte Carlo and left the transmission in first gear to see what would happen. It will shift eventually but it really winds out the engine and burns up the transmission when you do this. I could literally smell burned transmission fluid after driving around like that for a while and the engine was almost in the red.

I drive a rental car every week, and I sure don't give a rats ass about them... Never slow down on bumps (bottom out frequently), use it to push shopping carts out of the way at supermarkets, door dings from parking close to other cars, etc...

I purchased one, and it has been so far so good compare to the non-rental units out there. Still it is a Ford Taurus and what do you expect about the reliability?

Tranny range sensor goes, common Taurus problem, fixed under warranty
Roof has microscopic leak, fixed under warranty
Headlight knob break, fixed under warranty (this is probably a rental car thing)
Sagging rear spring, break after warranty, common taurus problem.

So there you have it, it is not any better or worse than other used car. They have maintanence records and are heck of cheap (11.5k miles 2001 Taurus SES, MSRP $21k, got it for $13.5k the same year in 2001, in December)
