I have heard of people doing this to other headphones. I got these for cheap and really like them, was curious if it is worth toying with these to make them sound even better.

Haven't heard of any mods myself, but they're so good out of the box - what do you want to change about them? I've done a few headphone mods myself and found that they're often just not worth it - people have different preferences when it comes to audio so, say they mod their mid-heavy headphones to open up the highs - they may love that but another person might consider it too bright.. This coming from the guy who, based on forum recommendations, modded a pair of headphones he loved last week and now can't bare to listen to them because the sound is now so colored post mod (and the mod isn't reversible).. People who call themselves audiophiles online tend to like their headphones really bright- I don't get it!

I've done it. I won't go into details about what you can do or how it changes the sound, but if you search for mods on Google or Head-fi, you'll find a few pages detailing mods.

IMO, the mods are worth it. They make the highs better and smooth out the frequency response. However, you lose a bit of bass in the process.

What headphones did you mod?

I'm a big proponent of modding, but the more in depth you get with it, the more you're likely to ruin the sound. If a headphone needs that much modding, you're generally better off with a different headphone. Most of the mods I've seen, you can accomplish the same thing with tak and possibly some cotton balls while being fully reversible (plus you can fairly easily adjust it in either direction) and costing much less money. It might not be perfect, but if nothing else you can see if you like it, and if you don't can either adjust it or remove it entirely.

I will admit that some popular mods have never sounded very good on any headphone I've tried them on, namely stuffing the earpads. It causes things to get really echo-ey and distant and kills the bass (the only ones that it was listenable were on headphones where I had upped the bass or had too much bass stock, but it makes it so much more fatiguing to listen to and often gives me a headache).

I'll admit to talking out of my ass a bit - I don't mod heavily, I've modded about 3 headphones in my life and have had mixed results.. This one time last week I modded these cheapie in ear woodies that sounded surprisingly good (Kanen something or the other) and the warm, smooth sound was replaced with no bass and way too much on the high end after the mod.. It's a sound a lot of people actually like - the post mod reminded me of these "audiophile" head direct headphones that people rave about, but I find too harsh. So it's a personal thing, completely... The mod in question was piercing the outer foam so it wasn't reversible. No big loss - the headphones cost me $6. But I'm unemployed and gave my wife my favorite headphones and was going to make do with the cheapies since they sounded so good, so it was a tiny bummer that they sound like crap now (though the modder claimed great things when he suggested it). Not a huge loss - I ordered another pair, just gotta wait a month to get them from China.
