Has anyone here ever had their name changed

I have always wanted to but imagine I never will.

I have spent years establishing a good credit history under my given name and now that I finally have it I would be afraid of messing things up by changing it.

I have written under this name (ie not my birth name) for quite a while but now it seems a lot of my friends are in the habit of calling me by this name as well. So it has gotten to the point that is just plain confusing at times.

Anyone done it? It apparently is not terribly difficult.

Well, I've heard of someone who had his name changed to the name of a computer game character, if that helps.

I have. This is how it works.

The government knows you by your social security number, not your name. Your SS number does not change. You are simply assigned a new SS card under a new name, but with the same SS number.

Just show the bank and DMV and other such places the proper name change forms and they will do the rest.

It's not that big of a deal.

When women get married, their names are changed, so how is it any different? It's not a difficult process.

One more thing. CitizenDoug, you post some of the looniest threads ever written. I didn't realize it was you again until I posted that last message. You're a few McNuggets short of a Happy Meal.

I know someone at my high school that did, but I think his name was misspelled on his birth certificate. He didn't seem to have any problems.

That's a good one -- I will have to remember that.

But really a couple might be more appropriate ;)

I've been planning to do it for years, just never have gotten around to it. I seriously hate my last name. It's hard for me to pronounce along with my first name, and isn't my birth name. Stepfather adopted me when he married my mom, and I hated him till the day he died.

In many state, you have to post a notice in the local newspaper for two weeks, so that anybody who has an argument against it, or who you might be trying to "escape" from, will see it. This of course is probably due to some outdated law based on the idea that everyone of any consequence and whom you might ever have had a problem with, reads the local paper.

Legally, in many states you can just start telling people your new name. The court order is just to make it official and allow you to get new documents. In other states though, the court document is required.

So there was never any confusion when applying for credit?

I've never used much credit myself. Credit cards are scams. If I cannot afford to pay cash for something, it's my opinion that I should not be buying it. But I doubt it would be a problem.

Chris = October 12th, my birthday and the real christopher columbus day. a great man no matter what the hippie historians have to say about it.

Plummer = mothers maiden name

Rolls of the tongue a little better than Doug Halpern ;)

I would stick with Doug Halpern. Chris Plummer sounds like...well, the name of a plummer.

If you want to change your name, you have to think of an exotic name.

Like Christopher St. Pierre Laurent IV.

And then buy a cashmere scarf and a pair of sunglasses and say "Ciao!"

You'll get the panties everytime.

Well it was not exactaly an overnight decision. Like I said I have been writing under the name for years. However I do like that you do not like it ;) Makes it seem kind of, unique.

As for the sunglasses, I lost my regular glasses a few months ago and have not looked back ;)
