I know you can buy like laptop cases online with motherboards already in them. Has anyone here had that experience? If so, how different is it from building a desktop? Do you save money?

do you save money no not neccessarily. alot of the name brand laptops come with software pre-loaded on there. for example microsoft word ..usually an anti virus program and a firewall which normally you would have to pay seperate if your building a pc from scratch.

Actually for the most part, based on my experience in working in retail, all of the software they toss in for free is junk. The main things you need is the OS Windows Xp Home, and probably the DVD/CD burning software if even that. It comes with Microsoft Works (not the Office Suite e.g. word, excel, powerpoint), unless you add that pre-loaded through the manufacturer. And the anti-virus software is a 90-day trial for the most part. Plus I'm not even sure how you would go about building a notebook, and I'm sure it's all a big headache. Just my 2 cents.

It better to buy a retail laptop since they are cheap. But when it comes to desktop it is better built than retail. Oh yeah they guy knothead is wrong all the applicatons they give you are junk spam . They wont give software like word which cost 250$$ mor-n all they give you is junk application which wastes hd space

you would have to pay for it anyways. since when did they start ever including quality software in comps u buy? the computer's already bloated by the time it arrives. many of my friends and relatives buy comps from vendors and none have come with anything decent.
