Not the stock certificate and not jewlery, but the real stuff like the South African gold coins and ingots. Where did you buy it?

Are you predicting a depression soon and a collapse of the economy by any chance?

Yeah, check out that FW thread. I would avoid ingots because they can be harder to sell (some buyers won't trust they are authentic, but if you are selling them to the place you bought them from and they know you, it won't be an issue). One ounce coins give you a good bang for the buck.

As always, if you're predicting the collapse of government then guns, ammo, body armor and canned food are a better investment than gold.

I had an ounce of gold that I picked up when it was worth around $250 or $300 (somewhere around there).

I sold it when it was worth about the same and now wishing I had not needed the money at the time...

There's a slight difference between "collapse of the economy" and "collapse of the government". Sounds like the OP wants a hedge against the weakening dollar.

Bank CDs and foreign stock funds make more sense for that than gold. The historical return on gold is awful, it spikes during stressful times then promptly slumps and gives up most of its value. Gold is already peaking and ripe for a big fall.

Ns1: and cigarettes
Good point. For peaceful trading (instead of a 9mm credit card) cigarettes, weed, chocoloate are good additions to the canned food. Don't forget the antibiotics and first aid supplies.

Buy silver instead, recognized rounds. Outperforming gold and a better long/short term investment. Check out the supply/demand, the majority of silver is only on paper.
