Has anyone heard of "unlocking" 166/333Mhz FSB on AMD cpus?

anyone read the stuff regarding the L12 bridge???

"secret L12 bridge = 166/333 FSB for any AXP?"

L12 bridge = 166 FSB
In this case the PC booted and the BIOS quite clearly shows a 166MHz FSB. A simple L12 connection to unlock 166MHz FSB speeds seems to be well worth the effort ? if you choose to unlock the multiplier, unlock this higher FSB setting as well to give a significant performance boost.

anyone want to try this on their Tbred???

What does this mean for cpu performance and overclocking? Could this mean that a given Tbred might OC FSB better after modding the "L12" bridge?

Sorry for the ignorant questions, but TIA!

I doubt there will be any performance difference rather than if you had just manually increased the fsb to 166 MHz via the BIOS.. All it does is set the cpu to 166 MHz fsb as the default instead of 133. This may be needed for certain motherboards (can't think of one at the moment though).

There should be hardly, if any at all, effect on the cpu's overclockability. That is based on the stepping, revision, and week. :)

This setting was designed to simply signal the"Auto Detect" function to the mobo re 133 or 166MHz. However "Praetorio" found that by cutting the 3rd L12 bridge from the left, which resets a default 166 code to 133, he was able to raise the FSB frequency to well over 200MHz, whereas he had been limited to under 200Mhz with the default setting. No one knows "why" this should work since no one actually runs at 133 or 166, but it has been "confirmed" by many people. So improves "system" performance in this respect.

Was posted at xtremesystems.org AMD forum, think it's a "sticky", subject starts with "Solution for Running High FSB...".
We have a page on tech details, bridges, circuit, etc, and comment on Praetorios finding at

Thanks gents!

So no sense looking for L12 bridges on my tBred B 1700+ in the hopes of connecting and getting a better FSB OC then. Interesting tho, if I ever have a 333 CPU.

Cheers!
