There was a really good story on Primetime about this back in june. Not everyone is a good candidate for the surgery, which the commercials NEVER say. They had a woman who was a bad candidate go around to several places asking if she should have it done. The more expensive places turned her away, but the bargain basement place said she was good to go.

Check out www.surgicaleyes.com I guess they've got some good info.

And AFAIK, the long term effects are unknown

My teacher was nearly blind in one eye, had it done for free because of her husband's job (forgot what it was) but she now has perfect vision!

It only costs ~$800 an eye or something, and I personally would give $800 for a fixed eye, rather than $200 per pair of glasses, so much on contacts, and the worry of losing a contact/pair of glasses.

It's totally worth it.

does anybody have any doctors they recommend in texas OR in california? Please PM me..

I'm really intersted...my doctor said i could do it since my bad vision has peaked (it even got a little better last year during the checkup)

One of my teachers had it done -- she told me that before she had it done, her vision was HORRIBLE -- without special custom-made contact lenses she could only see darkness. Those contact lenses cost her about $200 per pair, and she had to replace them every 6 months or something.
After she had it done, her vision was PERFECT, and it still is.

I myself wear glasses, but I'm quite wary of this procedure -- I don't know what I would do if something went wrong. Perhaps I'll consider it more carefully when I'm older and this new technology matures some more.

A search through the archives should show a few threads about Lasik.

In Pittsburgh there's a place that does it for $499 per eye, and I've also read about people who have gone to Canada to have it done for even less. The reasoning was that Lasik has been done in Canada for longer than in the US and they are more experienced.

i don't think its recommended to get it while you're young. I was researching it a while ago, and your eyes still change and it'll be best if it was done in your mid 20's. But what do i know.

I wish I could have it done, my contacts are a 4.5 and 5 perscription (supposidly bad I guess since I cant see sh!t past 1ft w/o glasses/contacts) but I'm a poor college student, I doubt I'll get it done anytime soon..

P.S. I wonder what 24 hours of lanning will do to this surgery :D

Anyone watch that simpson's that is set in the future and Ned Flanders is blind? He says something to the effect of "Ya I got lasik but who knew 20 years later your eyes fall out". I am wary of the long term effects and what could potentially happen if something goes wrong. It is still a LASER next to my EYE :)

hmm do most insurance cover this kinda stuff? it seems mostly cosmetic, but then again ~$200 for glasses every (other) year adds up

I believe your eyes itch terribly for the first few days, and the doctor will prescribe special eyedrops to help alleviate the pain, and you have to wear a special cloth or something on your eyes during sleep so as not to accidentally rub your eyes.

Hey, if you guys have some real questions I can go and ask my Dad ;)

He does the surgery, but I'm not even old enough to be a candidate (16), so I'm pretty much useless to you :p

Hey, yeah. If you could ask him, that would be great. I was just thinking about getting this done with my new insurance company, but I was (like others) wondering about the long term effects.

i had it done, no regrets.

here's the thing tho, i understand that money might be tight but this is definitely not something i would go for the best price on. a bad doctor can really screw you up. btw YGPM.

the only negative thing i have heard about laser eye surgery is that for some people their night vision is REALLY screwed up.

I know in the CDN air force now, if you had eye surgery done to correct your vision to get into the airforce, they will disqualify you, same wiht some police forces now. However you could lie and say no, how are htey gonna tell, i doubt you can see the surgery or the scar lines etc after its been done nad had time to heal...

however lots of poeple have been coming outta hte woodwork saying that hte eye surgery caused them to see halos and stars around bright lights at night and couldnt' drive and stuff

that sorta thing.

i think one of the prime tv news shows did a whole expose on it.
