Has anyone had a home custom built?

Hi All,

Well, I've finished my first year here in UT...and am considering building a house.

Does anyone have any experience or insight to offer? As a first-time homebuyer, this process intimidates the he!! out of me and I'm overwhelmed and haven't even begun yet.

For the UT folks or anyone else, is Ivory Homes a reputable builder? Will a new home builder negotiate the price of home to be built?

I have a billion questions and can't think of any...and it's obvious I'm having trouble sleeping over this soon to begin process 🙁

Any advice, comments, help, insight, suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
AJ

Freshman? What? (Checks out profile...) Ok, updated that old thing.

No, that's UT as in "Utah"...as in, "Why did you move from Florida to Utah?" 😉

is UT the UT that is Austin Texas? if that is the case, can you buy me a house in austing too, west campus is expensive. If you are really thinking of building your own house in austin, where are you going to find a lot that is in a decent neighboorhood, you might look into buying a home and the doing some remodeling if you don't like a few things about it.

whoops 😀 i thought you meant UT as in UT-Austin... 😛

Oh, and google searches have been fruitless about info for building a new home...then again...I'm way past my bedtime; so any good links would be appreciated.

fool.com and hud.gov are covered 🙂

But in defense of those above, my profile said FL until about 3 minutes ago.

My uncle built a custom home in southern Utah. (He lives in Springdale - a tiny little town outside Zion Nat'l Park. Closest place you'll probably recognize is St. George).

His house rocks.

Wish there was even land in Nassau County to build a new house on... prices for 50-year-old homes (no matter what condition) are ridiculous.

I had a custom home built once, I even worked with an architect to design what I wanted, then took it to the builder. It all went very well until the final closing when the builder tried to get an extra $7k out of me because he said he "underestimated some costs". Long story short, I told him to pound sand up his a$$ because we had a contract and I wasn't paying it, and I never did. He did not have a legal leg to stand on and he knew it.

Just remember that when dealing with houses and real estate, nothing is binding unless it is in writing. Get EVERYTHING in writing, no oral contracts.

Other than that, I was happy. Also, it will always take considerably longer to complete the house than what they tell you. This house was our second house we built, and both times it took 2 months longer than they originally said. I understand though, the contractor can't account for bad weather, lazy crews, etc.
