Consider installing XP in a dual boot mode. If you have Win 7 Pro or Ultimate, you can run XPmode in a virtual machine.
I just have win 7 home premium
XP Mode won't work for you, but you can use either Virtualbox or VMware player to install it in a virtual machine under Win 7 Home Premium. Of the two, I prefer VMware player as it does provide some 3-d graphics acceleration within the virtual machine.
If you use Player, the quickest way to do the install under VMware is to use a tool like Imgburn to create an ISO of your XP install CD. Mounting the ISO and using it to install is much quicker than installing from the physical CD.
