We weren't talking about notebooks, it was comparing the $6.5k Mac Pro I specced up there. Even so, there are now more than a few PC notebooks under $500, and loads below $600, that include a BD-Read/DVD-Writer. BluRay, USB3, video cards above a single 5870 or dual 5770, lots of other things aren't even options on the site, which means dealing with aftermarket products. Not to mention why on earth did they make Displayport? If you have a big HDMI-ready TV or large high-quality DVI monitor, you have to get an adapter. Bleh.

The Dell equivelent to the Mac Pro, the Precision T7500, includes goodies like SAS Raid ready, USB3, etc, which are extra on the Mac. Of course, you do have to select the BD drive as an option (not an option on the Apple Mac Pro config page, though it's probably cake to install after the fact, not sure about playback software though).

Macs are more expensive, by a long way, that's been established, it doesn't make them worse machines though. I took price out of the equation. if you're all about saving money then a Mac is not the way to go, but if your looking for the best machine to live with then in my opinion, you need something that runs OSX properly.

On a side note, unless your building pre-built games machines you always have to deal with after market cards etc.

It does, but it's not fine, it's complicated. You have to stream the disk image to VLC, it's a pain that needs to be addressed.

oh i forgot to add

quicktime = fail = </thread>

arguably the worst media player ever. it took them until version 7 to implement full screen for FREE users (until then it was only for QT pro and above).

I've never had a problem with quicktime, I really prefer it to WMP!... It's perfect, it is a small window with a video playing in it, no extra crap.

i, on the other hand, have experiences the giant shitbox for video playing software it is. i avoid quicktime like the plague. it tries to make itself the default media playing for damn near everything. is your experience somehow more valid than mine?

No I would say they both cancel each other out. I'm surprised you feel that way, i've never had an issue with it doing anything at all.

Oh hell yeah, for $5k you could build a system that would make that $6.5k Mac Pro look like a trash bin.

Been doing IT work for a long time and the few Windows based Xenon desktops I encounter are typically owned by R-tard VP of sales types who think it's cool to have a 'workstation class' machine on their desktop.

Frankly don't get what a 'workstation class' machine is, other it being an urban definition for an over-sized and over-priced system that is obsolete before the shrink wrap is off. Xenons belong back in the server rack provisioned for Vmware, not running desktop OS's.

I realize the Xenons haven't been crippled by Intel and hence you can't run more than one physical processor, but who gives a crap. The Xenon is overpriced, the surrounding chipsets and motherboards are overpriced, and you can typically go Core and get within 90-95% of the absolute performance for often 1/3 the price. That's on the PC side - Apple users don't have these options because Apple has no choice but the keep a big performance gap between the Mac Pro and iMac to keep Mac Pro users in a haze of ignorance and buying upgrades.

Frankly I wish Apple would go back to IBM or Motorola. All they did was bad mouth how Intel platforms were a piece of junk and brag about how Motorola's superior technology was going to put Intel out of business.

Wow, they sell workstations based on the XBox 360 Xenon CPU in the US? Here they usually base them on the Intel Xeon processor instead.
