Has anyone found Gmail POP access via Outlook Flaky this week?

I'm new to gmail, thanks to the kindness of Anandtechers, my wife and I have accounts.

However, despite my best attempts to configure Gmail access via Outlook, I continually get messages such as this:

Task 'pop.gmail.com - Sending' reported error (0x800CCC7D) : 'Your outgoing (SMTP) server does not support SSL-secured connections. If SSL-secured connections have worked in the past, contact your server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).'

Now, the weird thing is that I've tried both 465 and 587 ports to access the smtp.gmail.cm outgoing email server, and sometimes when testing the account, everything seems find - yet both testing and sending actual emails is very flaky, rarely it works, most often it does not. It's clearly not the settings, as they *do* work on occasion, but not consistently enough.

Is this just a facet of the beta situation, or is something wrong with accessing the Gmail Smtp.gmail.com server?

Thoughts?

And what forum would you suggest?

I considered Networking, or Software...but well, didn't think it quite fit, so I figured Off-Topic was for pretty much anything.

Still wondering.... :)

Could be your ISP, maybe it's not setup for sending SSL.

What ISP do you use and are you using their SMTP server, usually you have too?

Thanks for the response.

At home, we use netzero. The strange thing is that it works, occasionally. That would have me think that Netzero isn't the problem...but I could easily be wrong

actually i've been having issues poping my mail from pop.gmail.com as well (YES I've configured things correctly) but it seems to hang at the "connecting...sending login info" portion and doesn't give me any error msgs. i know there is mail in inbox b/c i've checked

i'm using thunderbird 1.0 but working great for about a week and now it doesn't seem to want to let me download my email...oddly enough smtp works fine and i can telnet pop.gmail.com and get a response

I got lots of gmail timeouts in my Outlook too. I fixed this by changing my send/recieve settings. All my problems occured when polling the server every 1-2 minutes for long periods of time. Now it's set at 10 minutes and I haven't had a problem in weeks. I'm not certain my 'solution' fixed the problem though, it may have just been growing pains on their side which they happened to fix when I changed my settings. How often does your Outlook auto send/recieve, and is Outlook always running?

I spoke too soon. I've gotten all sort of error messages the past few days with it, using OE6.

I'm glab I did a search for gmail because I too have been having problems this week with gmail and Thunderbird 1.0. I thought it was because I updated Tbird. I even deleted the account and then set it back up, but still problems. It says I have 11 messages, but it doesn't download any of them. If I right click and select get messages, sometimes it gets them, sometimes it doesn't. Hopefully time will fix this problem. :(
