Has anyone figured out how to disable MS Messenger in WINXP Pro?

You can try what I did in my system, rename the folder "messenger" in your Program Files to whatever you want and it will not start up.

If you don't have SP1, you can enter the following to uninstall it:

RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

If you have SP1 with Win XP, you can remove it under the control panel...add/remove windows programs...

at least it's supposed to be there...

I've used

RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

with SP1 and it worked fine. Why did you imply that you couldn't use it w/SP1?

Open C:\WINDOWS\inf\sysoc.inf and change msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,hide,7 to msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,7

Then use Add/Remove Windows Components to remove messenger
🙂

Just rename the messenger folder to something like 'messengerOFF'

MSN wont be able to start then.

hope this helps!

This was mentioned as the third post in this thread....

Actually, Win2K SP3 and WinXP SP1 allow you to remove the SHORTCUT in the Start Menu, not the application by itself. To do so, you must un-hide the Component in sysoc.inf as Wyst said then get to the add/remove control panel and Rremove the components. You might have to manually remove some files after if you upgraded Messengers via Windows Update.

Just to clarify a little bit 🙂

edit : spelling

I have been using what AJ suggested for a while. Ever since I updated to SP1 I have been getting an error when I tried to remove Messanger. My problem is that every time I access my hotmail account it trys to re install messanger. I just tried wyst's idea lets se how that works...
