Has anyone ever tried getting internet from a provider who doesn't cover your area? My problem is I am using DirecWay satellite internet right now and it is crap. I used to have RR cable back in NY (moved to florida for school) and it is a BIG change. I can't play games at all anymore. The cable provider stops about 4 miles away from me.. do you think they would run it to my house for extra money? There is nothing at all around here, all there is is 56k and satellite..... :| Can anyone help? I've tried so many websites and so many forums... I have no idea what to do. I mean, whatever it takes per month I will pay if I get DECENT internet where I can atleast play a game online...

Edit: I know very little about anything having to do with networking

I've heard it happen for DSL in certain cases, but takes a lot of escalations and string pulling by upper management. Even after that there's no guarantee of decent services. If the infrastructure isn't there, you're pretty much SOL. Sorry =*(

I really know how you feel about not having nice broadband. I was on dialup for a long time befor broadband was available here. I been on dsl for all most 2 years now. IMHO since the game patches are getting bigger all the time. I really think it makes playing games on dialup kinda hard. I do wish you luck at trying to get good source of broadband.

As tweekah said, if there is no infrastructure already in place, then your probably stuck with sat or dial up. Can't believe you do not have cable in your area  With dsl through your phone line (in which you do have a land line correct?) you must be w/in 15000 feet, give or take, of the CO (central office) to get their "rated best effort" speeds. Any further and speeds drop off quick. Can you call your phone provider and ask about dsl? Or you could go online to Covad, Speakeasy, or your local yocal phone company, type in your address and phone # and see if they offer service to your location.

I have a freind who is less than a mile from the where the ISP ends there coverage.....
Hes SOL!!!
But with that said I am suprised somebody doesn`t offer DSL......
If you are living on Campus Im very suprised that its not available to the students!!

YES IT IS. can you afford it? actually cable is available if you have the money. if you puchase necessary equipment they will hook you up. that equipment would include cable node, fiber, and coax cable to make the run and boost the signal. but before spending too much money on this just move closer.
