I'm just wondering how rampant fake money is in the US. Today I sold something to a lady through craigslist and the lady just gave me all $100 bills. I examined them carefully and held it in the light to make sure I can see the water marks. They look legit but I still feel paranoid.

If you feel paranoid about accepting $100 bills, get a Counterfeit banknote detection pen from Staples, they usually cost about $5 ...

Or tell the person $20s only

/common sense?

If you hold it up to the light, does it have that strip embedded in the paper?

It's hard to counterfeit modern USA currency. Look online for the different security features in modern bills.

Those pens don't detect anything...

edit: I should say they aren't very useful.

They're not designed to "detect" anything.

The chemical composition interacts with the material the bill is made out of.

If it's legitimate .. it turns (or stays) a mustard yellow.

If it's fake.. it turns black.

Is it 100% infallible? no.
Does it give peace of mind? sure.

Well, they do detect that a bill made from wood pulp is counterfeit.

Withdrawing thousands of dollars in genuine 50's and 100's, then dipping them in starch water, and letting them dry before depositing them again?

:hmm:

Unless something has changed, spraying the bill with hairspray will make the pen mark turn yellow and you'll think the bill is legit. Looking for the strip is far better.

Ask for money orders next time.

Those absolutely cannot be faked.

Right?

Yup.. exactly. That's why i trust this $2400 money order from some guy in Europe who wanted to buy the $20 watch i was selling. Yea... he made a mistake and made it out for $2400 instead of $24.00 ... but.. so what? I'll just send him the difference. It's all good.
