has anyone ever popped a blood vessel in their finger?

I was playing drums the other night and I started to feel pain in one of my fingers. It quickly got to the point to where I couldn't hold the drum stick. After another minute it started to swell up to the point I could not bend it. I'm not sure if I hit it on something or not. It happened during a song where I would be unlikely to hit it on something and I did not feel or notice any impact (although sometimes the adrenaline of playing can make things like that hard to notice). The swelling went down fairly quickly. Within an hour I was able to bend it again with a bit of resistance. It's been two days now and there is still some swelling, some resistance, and very minor pain. I've been taking motrin and icing it periodically. I'm just wondering how long this typically takes to heal, and how much damage I could be doing if I continue to play drums while it's still healing.

Doesn't sound like blood vessel to me. Your finger should be darkened from the congealed blood if it is blood vessel related.

I used to get those on volleyball games on cold days.

Go see a doc.

I will try to take a photo later, but it is pretty dark colored at each of the 3 joints on my finger. I know I should see a doctor, but it seems to be healing rather quickly and I am extremely busy between now and friday nights performance. Thank you for the replies!

Best to see a doc asap. You don't know if it is something minor or is it something serious. Especially if you plan to subject it to the same condition that made this occur. And you do need to give your band some time to find replacement.

Friday is tomorrow :awe:

You have a bruised vein. I've had the same thing: on the inside of a joint or between joints. It is a stinging pain with swelling and maybe a slight purple color. It happens when you're gripping something and it pinches the vein just right. I found that ice helps a bit, as well as elevating it a little.

Depends how bad it hurt and how much of the pain is from swelling vs joint pain.

really no joint pain. even though there are 3 darkened spots, the only spot that hurts when I touch it is the middle joint, and the pain is extremely minor.

That sounds quite accurate. Thank you very much for the reply.

The nail is normal color. Even the parts that are discolored have cleared up quite a bit. I will snap a photo after lunch.
