Has anyone ever killed their P4's running at 1.7v? Thugs?

My mobo (Asus P4T-E) undervolts like crazy (1.46v) and i have a P4 2.0a C1 (1.525V) that is capable of 3 ghz but it is not completely stable. (I'll get a rounding error on Prime95 after about 5 or 6 hours). I have pinned the the chip and it is 1.71 actual on idle and dips to 1.66V on load. But i recently took out the pin trick because i'm scared of getting sndns. Is 1.7 volts a safe voltage? i know anything above that isnt..

1.71v actual should be OK for quite some time, you'll probably change CPUs and boards well before it's showing signs of overvolt damage.

From what I read, if the cpu vcore is reading 1.7+ while under full load, you will kill it - eventually regardless of what kind of cooling. If it is at or slightly over 1.7 while idle then it shouldn't pose a problem.

Does it matter if my chip is a c1 or not? (In the bios, pinning the cpu results in 1.725V but like i said before it is 1.71 actual and 1.66 under load.) Just waiting for more advice.. thanks for the replies though guys.. i would like to get more responses from poeple that have actually pinned their cpu..

Both Thugs and Duvie killed CPU's but it it was well over 1.7V I believe.I read a couple guys have killed their C1 stepping CPU's at 1.7-1.71V.Not sure if that was idle or load.I think even idling at 1.7V is risky,but thats me.Thats why guys like Thugs and Duvie are running under 1.7V now.They run default voltage or no more than 1.65V.The B0 stepping CPU's seemed ok at 1.7V but the C1's are a different story. Doesn't mean your chip will die,but there is a risk.

man i guess its not worth it to get that extra 100 mhz because its stable at 2.9Ghz.. at 1.46V. 2.9Ghz is just an ugly number to me though!!!

If you check the OC threads here, you'll notice that the extra vcore only really gets you a few FSB... This might have made a difference in the P3 and Celly days, but with chips hitting 3.5+ GHz, its a negligible increase for the risk.

Thugs won't go higher then 1.6Vcore. IIRC

I don't go over 1.575 (1.55 actual since my boards undervolt also)... With the exception of a throw away celeron 2 ghz. But it runs @ 1.6something actual.
The point is different for everyone. I see no reason not to risk a celeron. They are dirt cheap, and if it goes out... well that may give me reason to replace it with a 2.53 mVID .

Till then... and even then, I still see no reason to worry. But that is my take on it.

yea i'm only asking because with my asus p4t-e, it won't let me change the voltage settings if i overclock. So i either can do 1.525V (1.46 actual) or pin it to 1.725 (1.71 actual) Thats the only way i can change the voltage (i wish i can just do 1.6 to get 1.525 actual). This chip can do 3.0 at default on most boards (except mine since it undervolts like crazy). Thanks for the reply guys. I guess its not worth it from what everyone's saying.. gotta be happy with 2.9 i guess.. =)

hehe... my celeron sux compared to yours. It really needs that overvolt to reach 2.8 .

Mine has been at 7.25v for over a year. I havent had any problems (yet).
