That will generally only happen to laminated particle board type furniture (Sauder, O'sullivan, etc.). It tells you in the paperwork that comes with to be careful of putting rubber and soft plastics in extended direct contact with the surface (you know, that plastic vs plasticizer thing). I suppose it could also happen to polyurethane finishes, but not so much on a waxed surface.
. IAC, one should learn during his upbringing not to put anything on wood furniture without a doilly (sp.?) or felt feet. So a good part of it is PEBKAC... That non-slip shelf lining material will make a mess of the cheap laminated furniture.
