I have heard about it, etc.. but, never got it to work.
Can anyone here confirm it is something other than an urban legend?

as in knowing your dreaming and being able to control it? yes I've had that happen maybe 5 times to me. Usually didnt last too long after I "realized" I had control. Time to do some stuff though =)

Once in a rare while, as I'm waking up, I realize that I'm dreaming and have some control over the storyline.

I usually wake up a few minutes later, though.

Its happened a handful of times with me as well. Once I tried to carry money over to this side by trying to wake up very very slow and methodically with the armfull of money in my grips, but unfortunately it failed and was gone when I came to full consciousness. :(

Probably once a month, most of the time when I become aware I just fly around, sometimes I'll be able to perform telekinetic powers, etc.

Its really hard to become aware of your dream world because most of the time, its with people you know and in places you've already been to. Usually the dream progresses for a good amount of time before you start to pick up the minute details that leads you to controlling the dream. I recall one time I gained awareness when I realized that I was in church when I was still away at college.

I have had 2 since I found out the definition, and maybe 1 prior. The first one that I KNOW i had, was like a week after my buddy talked it all up. I tried some cool things, but nothing real special. The second one was very cool. I managed to hover over my friends, and then started casting fireballs. That was, until I managed to cause my hands to combust at which point I awoke from my own dream. Not kiddign at all, it was a very cool experience.

Fool! Do you know what kind of services you could have paid for while you were dreaming :p

Yep, usually before waking up or going to bed, also I can sometimes pick the topic of my deep sleep dreams by thinking about the subject real hard and things it relates to in my life before I go to bed.

Although I sleep walk and have trances very frequently (when I get stressed from work, watch out), so I am not a normal sleeper. ;)

i can for a short period of time once i realise i'm dreaming, but soon after that i wake up. Dont know why, but once i realise it's a dream, it's hard to stay asleep. If i could master that, i'd be so happy, theres nothing better than being able to fly(hey, if i can only do it in a dream, i'm gonna milk it).

It has happened to me a number of times a long time ago. It doesn't happen to me much anymore.

I remember that at times I would absolutely know that I was in a dream and I wanted wake up. I didn't do the pinch yourself thing-- instead I would jump off of an elevated place, like from the top of some stairs. And when I would get that feeling in my stomach, I'd wake up. Once I remember that I was near a cliff-- I jumped off and got that feeling in my stomach... and then woke up.

I don't think I've been able to do that. I would want to try to test the "die in a dream, die in real life" theory.

it works you just have to train yourself and not give up and once you obtain it never fall out of practice.
It took me about 4 months before I had my first lucid dream. It takes a great deal of patience.

I have lucid dreams quite often, and can stay in them for quite a while. I tend to wake up confused though.

I've done it before :)

The time that really stands out... I was getting mugged by a guy with a knife. And I somehow realized it was a dream--no idea as to what tipped me off. So then I thought: "Well this is my dream... so I'm going to have the knife..." And BAM! the knife was in my hands, I killed the would-be mug-er. :D It was awesome.

The best lucid dream I ever had was at boot camp with the Marines. I suddenly realized that I was dreaming and changed my surroundings to a typical living room with a comfortable couch and a cooler nearby, stocked with beer. For something like 4 hours (it seemed like that long) I sat on the couch, looked at the wall, and drank beer. I was completely relaxed and didn't have a care in the world.

This was around week 8 out of 13 through boot camp, a time that most recruits find themselves absolutely exhausted from wakeup until sleep that night. I woke up that morning with the biggest sh!t-eating grin on my face, and feeling more awake and refreshed than I had felt in years.

I've had many dreams in which I realized that I was dreaming and gained some sort of control over the experience, but it's not like flicking a switch and being able to instantly do whatever I want.

For instance, I remember a nightmare that I had once where a humongous bear was chasing me in my grandmother's back yard. At some point during this dream I realized that I was dreaming, though I guess it wasn't a total realization because the bear still seemed like a very real problem at the time.

One thing that changed immediately was that I lost the "running in molasses" effect and was able to sort of leap in long slow arcs to stay away from the bear, like I still couldn't completely give up the notion of gravity even though I knew I was dreaming.

Yup. It's great.

The things you need to avoid are alcohol before bedtime (screws the sleep cycle) and being over tired.

Lucid dreaming rocks.... I used to be so good, I actually saw places thousands of miles away and was right about what I saw. My long-distance boyfriend at the time was totally freaked out by it. :D
