i've considered going to africa with the peace corps, but im not religious, so no missionary stuff for me.

I know of someone who did Central America for three years. I hear it is very difficult, and sometimes you must fiend for yourself. He came back quite thin and with some sort of intestinal bug. But if it is your cup of tea, go for it.
