Has anyone enlisted in the army as a naturalized US Citizen? What documents do you need to provide? Would a social security card and passport be fine ro do i need my naturalization certificate?

On one hand I had to show all that proof to prove I was a citizen to get my passport anyways, but the recruiter wants my naturalization certificate. Problem is I was naturalized when my parents were naturalized so I don't have my own certificate.

How I got my passport was I sent in my father's certificate as well as a birth certificate to prove my citizenship. I don't want to have to mail the originals of these documents (the documents are in Virginia, I'm in Illinois) and I don't want to pay $385 to get a certificate just for this.

I would think the passport is proof enough of my citizenship to enlist (since you have to be a US Citizen to get a US passport) but my recruiter is 1. somewhat confused and 2. thinks i really should get a naturalization certificate.

I wouldn't think that it'd be a problem since you don't even have to be a citizen to enlist. You can spend 8 years in the military as a non citizen.

I did read that if you join the military and fullfil your time/duty, you can automatically become a US citizen without all the red tape and waiting.

I have no doubt you read that, but it was incorrect.

We had a number of Mexicans in the Navy on my ship (most of them were messcooks) and they all said the same thing. Its NOT a promise or automatic citizenship, but its a huge boost to their chances and the process moves much faster after they get out.

You are right, look like it will move them to the head of the pack and skip all the redtape

The thing is I am a US citizen, I just need to know what documents I need to enlist. I have a US passport, but if I need a Naturalization Certificate (N550) I would need to pay $380 and wait a long time to get one.
