I'd move back in with my parents and be unemployed before I did data entry as a job.

Depends on the job. I worked at one where neither was needed...just being able to enter info into different fields of a premade form on a computer. I've also worked at one where Excel is required, and that's about it.

All depends on the job.

I worked in a high stress job before working DE, therefore the monotony was a welcome change. I wouldn't be able to do it long term though. I did it for a little less than 2 months.

what if I'm already crazy?

Well then you have data entry written all over you.

There are worse jobs than data entry... like counting live sperm on a petri dish

You're barely making above data entry pay. ;)

Your brain will commit suicide if you take a data entry job. You will then develop a case of carpal tunnel so severe that both your arms will have to be amputated, and you will go blind from the CRT with a refresh rate of ~30Hz that they will force you to stare at for obscene periods of time.

But hey, if that's worth $15/hr for you, then go right ahead. In response to your OP, no, you will need no skills whatsoever.

That's overqualified. The only thing it requires is autism, the patience of a saint and some disability that prevents you from working ANY other job, or heavy doses of ritalin.

Honestly, if monkeys could use a keyboard, they could likely be trained to do it.

I did data entry as a temp for about 2 weeks. Mindlessly boring, unless you have a crazy coworker, which I did. The work I did was on a terminal. All I needed to do is type and tab and daydream. Actually not as bad as it sounds. It's like putting your mind on autopilot. The hardest obstacle is staying awake. For $15 an hour, I'd do it again. Go for it.

it is okay if you can listen to talk radio or something that will stimulate your brain while you do it.

Permanent = HELL NO.

Work that job for, at most, a month. Beyond that...you'll go crazy.

Mindless work, but better than flipping burgers for entry level. Typing and 10-key are obviously important.

If I hadn't responded to a 3-line classified ad and worked data entry for 6 months, I wouldn't have my current job--The gods work in strange ways.

Question.

Does it really matter if I'm good at the numpad? Because I'm so used to the numbers at the top, 99% of the time never make an error.

If you are entering mostly numbers, the 10-key is preferable because you use only one hand. The other hand can be used for flipping pages, answering the phone, wanking off, etc
