Not to rag on you OP, but if a girl is materialistic enough to question the ring you give her... she is most def not worth it.

Tiffany's = throw your money away.

You can buy a ticket to a foreign country and get a custom ring made in a couple days and save massive dollars. And it has the whole "effort" aspect to it. Would make a better story than looking up the closest Tiff's and putting no effort in your expression of devotion.

My mom loved my dad and vice versa... he gave her a $100 ring and she didn't give a crap. She knew his situation but didn't let it bother her because she knew she would be happy with him. To put things in perspective, my mom was the school hottie from a good family and my dad was a working boy in India.

edit: My parents rock.

Why do you need to get a diamond? Diamonds are no more rare than any other precious stone in the world (well, close). The supply is just artificially restricted in order to keep prices up. In fact, most diamonds come from African warlords who use slaves to mine the diamonds. Seriously, reconsider.

This kind of garbage comes up in these threads every time. He didn't ask for opinions on the state of the diamond trade or alternative stones.

This ought to drive you absolutely nuts...I bought my wife a diamond engagement ring plus my wedding gift to her was a past, present, future necklace with diamonds. She also has a pair of diamond stud earrings.

It doesn't bother me at all. It's your own money and if you want to buy those things, go ahead. But you should realize who suffered and who is really gaining from your purchases. I guess out of sight, out of mind. Who cares who I have to step on to get what I want as long as I never have to see the person.

To the OP: Congrats on finding that special person though. I hope you and she are very happy together.

she may be worth it but in reality there is no advantage to a tiffany ring other than the name, and you being on anandtech should know ALL about price premiums for brand name. You should know you can build a PC far superior to say an alienware machine or an over priced sony machine for far less. Same with tiffany jewelery. My dad is a jeweler for a living, he deals in ONLY high cost merchanise (ie. $100,000 just for the stone cost prior to smaller stones, metal cost, and labor) for a specialty made to order company out here in Orange County. One of my dads best friends son wanted to get engaged to a girl who wanted a tiffany ring that would cost $22k. My dad made the EXACT ring with NO difference between the 2 and stamped it Tiffany & CO by a GENUINE tiffany stamp and put it in a real tiffany box, for $10k. Granted that is cost+labor which is roughly 40% less than you would find in any normal jewelery store in a mall but still.
Basically whaty i am sayign and what others are saying is even if she is worth it the ring is not. You can have a ring made for you or find one at a good place for FAR less where you can save that money for something else like a down payment for a house, of you can spend almost as much or exactly as much and get a far better ring, larger stone, better quality/color stone etc that doesn't have the Tiffany name.

OH and congrats on finding the one! i hope you 2 are happy together! one day hopefully i will meet the one aswell =\

Depends on the girl. Some would be pissed if you bought an artificial diamond instead of a natural diamond, even if the artificial diamond is of higher quality. If you're lucky you won't get a girl like that.

The only flawless artificial diamonds are CVD diamonds, which are not very inexpensive last time I checked.
