QFT. I know a few places around Toronto that make great rings.

True story. I had a family friend who recieved a tiffany engangement diamond ring that she showed off and acted like it was the best diamond ring around. My cousin worked with a local jeweler and didn't spend as much money (i think it was 1k less). Both rings where appraised a couple years later and my cousin's engagement ring (local jeweler) was worth more than the tiffanys. Without going into detail, my cousin's diamond, setting, and band on her ring was better across the charts than the tiffanys for less money.

Everyone is an expert because they got the BEST DEAL EVER. Seriously, to answer your question, I did not buy a ring from Tiffany. As some have already mentioned, the overpricedness of Tiffany stuff was enough to turn me and my wife off.

My wife is in the jewelry business and designed her engagement ring herself. The things I have learned about jewelry is astonishing. Basically, learn to haggle and if at all possible pay cash. You will be amazed at how low you can get them to go.

The point is all jewelry is overpriced. If your future wife wants Tiffany, you pay more for the same quality somewhere else, but it is what she wants! Don't let internet retards try and put you down. It is your money and your future wife, do what you wish. Just be advised that everyone here is an expert .

Would you rather have a Tiffany engagement ring that is 1/2-3/4 the size of a non-Tiffany engagement ring and worse quality?

Tiffany does select high quality diamonds, but you can get a much better/more valuable diamond ring. It isn't like the blue box it attached to the ring so nobody knows it is a Tiffany or not.

They WILL notice the difference between a 1.5c stone and a .75c stone though.

Learning about stones was part of the fun for me. Remember, the cut (not shape but quality of the cut) is the most important part of the diamond.

A well cut 1c stone will look bigger than a poorly cut .75c stone.

My fiance got mine at a pawn shop outside of Tunica, MS after a good night of gambling. It doesn't matter where he got it or how much it cost (that much he won't tell me). He went with his sister not intending to but my ring but came across what was apparently a good deal and went for it. My engagment ring is a good size (not sure on the size) pear shape and my wedding band a 4 diamonds in it. I love it. I would suggest you shopping around at local store and even pawn shops before you spend that much on a ring. If she really loves you she will not care how much you spend. Infact she may be happy you saved money that could go towards something else.

Yeah, ok. People here have the common sense to realize there is no difference between a diamond from Tiffany's and a similarly speced diamond from somewhere else and you use that as an excuse to insult us?

Thankfully my fiancee wasn't a fan of Tiffany's offerings. Ended up getting something from a local mom-n-pop dealer, the setting was similar to this: link. Platinum band, center stone .65 G/VS2, and side stones are about .30 carats. Price out the door, $4,200.

No, but when my then GF at the time tried on an $18k engagement ring from them while I was next to her.. I kinda got scared.

Word to the wise, bringing your girlfriend/fiancee-to-be along isn't a good idea. The process for buying a ring shouldn't be any different than any other purchase you ever make, where you assess price and quality and look for a good deal. Bring along your intended, however, and you'll find that logic goes straight out the window. The entire jewelry retail business model is based on this, without female irrationality there would be no profit margin for any jeweler anywhere. The jeweler realizes this and will team up with your beloved to suck every possible cent out of you.

Here's how it will probably play out. She'll see and latch onto a ring in a brick-n-mortar store, and woe be unto you if you suggest going to another store "just to make sure that's the one you want." Another mistake men sometimes make is expressing anything approximating an opinion on her selection unless (a) you're confident enough to say why a certain style looks better on her than another (you'd better be able to cite at least 3 reasons why), and (b) what you suggest as an alternative is more expensive than her original selection. Finally, you're also dead meat if you suggest buying the ring online, or buy the exact same ring from another store where it's on sale. What would normally be a no-brainer (buy the same thing for less money) turns into a test, as if overspending is a sign of your love. Trust me, it doesn't make sense and you shouldn't try for it to make sense.

We weren't actually there looking at engagement rings, just some other jewelry. The sales associate offered her to try the ring on though and she couldn't resist. Great advice for the future though. :)

I went to Tiffany to get ideas for a design. I then bought the stones individually (the diamond I got online and 2 sapphires I bought from a stone wholesaler on Jeweler's row in NYC) and had a custom jeweler make the setting out of platinum.

Depends on the girl. If I were to do it again, I'd get a larger stone albeit a sapphire flanked by two small diamonds instead of the diamond flanked by sapphires I gave my wife.

wondering if anyone is actually going to answer the OP's question about how high the tiffany markup is.

Depends on the girl. Some would be pissed if you bought an artificial diamond instead of a natural diamond, even if the artificial diamond is of higher quality. If you're lucky you won't get a girl like that.

I bought my wife a custom made ring. Custom design, one of a kind, just like her. Worth more than any money could buy at Tiffany's (unless you do like how the guy did in "Sweet Home Alabama" the movie)

She's worth it.

So you're saying she is materialistic...and only wants a tiffany's ring? hm..run!

Tiffany's is a ripoff, you can get the same style ring, better quality if not bigger, by shopping elsewhere.

not to mention this wont be the last piece of jewelery you'll be purchasing for your wife. Establish a relationship with a local jeweler...it will be worth your time in the long run.

Same here. Local jewelry store FTW. My wife knows this and it doesn't bother her at all.
