Can you visit the ruins like in Pompeii or are they underwater?Originally posted by: Pastfinder
Santorini, on the island of Thera (Santorini) is a neat place historically. Way back in/around 2000BC (not sure exactly), a volcanic explosion destroyed a good portion of the island and buried the town of Akrotiri similar to what happened to Pompeii. Excavations of the town have found even the roofs of some of the homes intact. Well, there's your history lesson for the day.

Yep, I've been there. Beautiful, but I crashed a scooter while there, which sucked. It's been a long time, and I went to so many of the Greek Isles that I don't remember too many particulars about it, though.
I do remember that it was at the end of my European trip and I survived on $1 gyros from gyro stands for 5 days because I was so broke.![]()
