Has anyone been able to get unsupported HP printers to work in Vista?

I have a Photosmart 1115 printer that I can't get working because when I try to install the software it makes it through halfway then can't continue because it can't detect the printer when I plug it in. Since Vista handles things differently the software doesn't detect the printer even though Vista says New Hardware Found.

If I install the drivers manually through the device manager they appear to work, but without the accompanying HP software installed nothing happens when I try to print. The print job just disappears.

Has anyone been successful in forcing the HP software to complete the installation? I'm pretty sure everything would work if it would complete the installation.

I know I can get the printer to work via the parallel port if I install it using the Vista driver for the Deskjet 900 series but I need to use the printer via USB.

Did you have the printer hooked up and on when you installed vista? I have a psc2210v that hp doesn't have any vista software for. I followed the ms instructions and had my printer on while installing vista and it added support for it albeit not as functional as proprietary hp software would be. You can also go into your printer folder and remove everything then do a hardware scan so vista will see your printer. I've had to remove the windows writer numerous times before it would show my hp in the printer listing much less keep it as the default printer.
