I am upgrading my son's computer and got him a Soltek SL-KAV/-X kt133a board.
Well, anyway, it was working fine but the fan I put on was loud as hell so I changed it to a quieter one. (without removing the HS from the board)
When I tried to fire the system up it wouldn't POST!
I am thinking I may have damaged the TBird processor. (I'll find out later today)

Just checking around I saw that NewEgg has 1600XP processors for $53.99 w/ free shipping.
This board supports XP's, but I am curious to hear from any of you guys that might be running an XP processor with a kt133a chipset and PC-133 memory. (since I havent done that before)
does the combo perform adequately?

Thanks in advance for any comments or help....

Yes a XP will make the system faster. Would it be better with DDR, YES, will SDRAM kill the XP, NO.

Just make sure you have the newwest BIOS and then install the new XP chip.

My MSI K7T Turbo is running an XP1700+ just fine with PC-133 SDRAM. I haven't flashed the BIOS yet, so it detects it as a Athlon 1.466 cpu, but it runs fine. Very big boost in the Sisoft Sandra cpu benchmarks over the old Duron 850. Grab one of those XP1600+ for $54 shipped while you can, you won't be sorry. (as long as your motherboard and RAM support a 133 Mhz front side bus)

I've got a 1700+ running on an Iwill KK266R Plus. I did flash the BIOS before I even tried to switch to an XP CPU. But if your T-bird is cooked that would be hard.
If I were you I'd dig into the T-bird problem a little more before going with an XP.

Pull the HS and check out the core to see if it's been damaged.
If not, clean it up and re-apply some good compound and try the HS/fan again.
