I'm tired of the downtime with my Roadrunner/Brighthouse Networks. My modem resets at least 5-10 times a day, often requiring "power cycling" where i have to unplug the modem for two minutes. In the last two weeks, i've probably had 5 solid days of downtime. I've spoken with RR techs, but they're as clueless as they come.

We had Ameritech phone service before we switched to AT&T for local AND long distance, so i'm not sure if we're still eligible for SBC DSL. I think Covad might be in the area too. I was paying ~$55 for my cable modem (plus the cost of cable TV) every month and there HAS to be a better package for DSL than what i'm getting now.

you may just need a new modem, we had similar problems but when we changed our modems it started working flawlessly.

I switched from Comcast to Verizon DSL. Oh yeah, that reminds me, I need to submit the expense form for my broadband at home. ;)

If you're in Cali, SBC won't provide DSL to 3rd party local service driven phones.

I had AT&T for local service in Anaheim, CA, and SBC refused not only to sell me DSL, but also refused to allow anyone else (like Earthlink) to provide the service either. :|

My cable modem rocks. Adelphia has been great for me.

I've had two DSL providers in my life and 2-3 cable. The technology they use is far less important than their overall quality. The best service I ever had for pings was with a DSL provider up in Canada, and the best for brute bandwidth (2-3 mbps up) was a cable provider in the same area. The stuff in the US is garbage compared to how nova scotia was 5 years ago (though I don't know how it is now), but cable vs. dsl is less important than provider vs. provider.

BTW I'm on Charter now and their cable is very solid. It basically never goes down.

I have primarily used cable for the last 5 years or so (Roadrunner/ATT/Comcast). I made the move to DSL for a few months after moving to Washington (I had Qwest DSL), and never really warmed to it. In general it seemed noticeably slower and more finicky somehow. That said, YMMV, and a good DSL provider is better than a crappy cable company.
