has anybody here rented a satellite phone before?

friend did. kinda expensive but works.
supposedly a small audio delay because of the bounce to the satellite.

never rented one, but I have used one..there is definitely an annoying delay when talking, but you get used to it.

Would a sat phone work if the normal cell service was down? (natural disaster or something)

YES
As long as the party reciving the call has service, The sat's are still in orbit, and the downlink station is OK.

whoa 15 bucks a min...i know a sat phone is like 2-3 bucks a min. much cheaper, but if going on a cruise is kinda want to be away from everybody. it could be easier to phone in on the port cities with a phone card. and just not be in contact while on the boat?

if your going on a cruise, isn't the whole point NOT to be in contact with anyone and get away from everything?
I'd throw a guy overboard if i saw him talking on a sat phone, your supposed ot be enjoying yourself, not communicating with landlovers.

i think if you're running a $100 million dollar company that is privately owned you'd want to stay in touch...wish it was me but its for someone else that asked me to get them the phone.
