Has anybody had cosmetic dentistry?

Lately I've been thinking about having something done about the 1/8" between my front teeth (let's just say my smile is somewhat less than attractive). At age 33, I think braces are out of the question as there's no way I'm going to wear them in a business/professional environment for the next upteen months. That basically leaves porcelain veneers. I consulted with my dentist and saw some of her before/after photos, some of teeth that were in worse shape than mine. Impressive work but it's an expensive procedure that my dental insurance obviously doesn't cover.

Has anybody here had cosmetic dentistry of any kind (not orthodontics)? What did you have done? Are you happy with the results? Would you do it again?

I have the porcelain veneers on my top four front teeth. I didn't have them done because of a spacing problem though. Mine are because of fillings I'd had done when I was in the 8th grade that no longer matched the enamel after several years. I've had them for almost 20 years now with no problems (knocking on wood) and I'm glad I got them. They were all done in one procedure that was a little long and a little uncomfortable, but no pain. They felt really strange at first, I could definitely tell they were there, but then I didn't even notice them after a few days.

The only problem, if you can call it that, is that you can't use any of the over-the-counter whitening strips on them. (I drink a lot of coffee and tea.) So you'll have to go to the dentist if you need to have them brightened up.

Had braces.

How are those Vaneer things put on? Are they basically like caps or shells over your real teeth?

They're just thin porcelain that's cut and shaped to fit the front of the tooth, so they take a mold of the tooth first. Then they buff the tooth a little to make up for the thickness of the veneer when it's added, they're only about as thick as a contact lense though. Then they clean the tooth with some sort of chemical. The veneer is attached with a glue/cement and they use a blue light of some sort to harden the glue. That's it.
