Has anybody gone to the Kentucky Derby?

What goes on there (aside from the obvious horse races)? When does the fun start? Would there be stuff to do on Friday and Sunday also? Tell me more about positive or negative experiences.
 
The fun starts two weeks before the derby with one of the world's largest fireworks shows. From there it is two weeks of partying.

As far as friday - there is The Oaks. Almost as big as the derby race wise. Also if you're gonna bet, learn how to do it first. The lines are very long on oaks/derby day so make your bets early. Sunday everybody is hungover. 😉
 
Go to the infield.
Get extremely drunk and obnoxious.
Have extremely drunk and obnoxious smokers blow smoke in your face, puke on your clothes, throw you in the mud, and grope you.
Profit.
 
It's a waste of time unless you want to get hammered drunk with 200,000 other rednecks/college students. Don't expect to see any horses. Last time I went someone had a mint julep glass smashed over their head, blood everywhere, like I said, it's a real classy event.

The best part is trying to sneak as much of your own booze in as possible, I hid a bottle of gin in a guys wheelchair 🙂 Best booze hiding tip I have heard - Vodka in ziplock bags in girls bra



 
it's one big weekend of inebriation. i've never been, but my brother used to live there. one year it rained Derby weekend and the party turned into everyone taking slides in the mud.

Certain parts of the infield are nice (1st and 2nd turns I think - haven't been to the infield in 10 years). It's preferrable to get seats though. Even then everybody is smashed.

About the mudsliding. Happens whenever the infield is wet. Smuggling booze? Easy, just use vodka in your cooler with some bottles of hawain punch. Insta-hooch.

Just like at least one time down in New Orleans for Mardi Gras.
