Has anybody ever been an "Account Executive"? I'm graduating and I need a job!

I was recently offered a the job of Account Executive just by sending in my resume. I didn't realize at first, but it's basically a traveling sales job where I choose my own hours. While I'm aware this wouldn't really help my career, I don't see why I shouldn't take this job. I was told by the sales manager that I could work as many or as few hours as I choose.

Is there any reason I shouldn't take this job while searching for a better career path? Each sale earns 2,000-3,000 and it's just a matter of putting in time and effort to sell (yes, cold selling). Seems like an easy second job I could always hold on to in case I have trouble with my career, no?

Is it for a legitimate company? When i was sending out resumes, i got similar offers... all from scam companies.

"Account Executive" is a VERY open-ended position title. It can me a WIDE range of things.
I have been an AE a few times, for years.

at the cable company, account executives are dummies that take customers' phone calls and make up bullshit as they go. as for cold sales, few things will get me to hang up / slam the door quicker.

Right. And in the best case they expect you make 2 such sales per year while you pay your own travel expenses and all the rest. And in the worst case, you get a 'contract' by mail, hand out your social security number, bank account number and what not, and you get robbed. Or something inbetween where you first have to follow a sales training. At your expenses of course.

Commission isnt bad per se, but if you dont get a half decent base salary or guaranteed minimum, dont go there. Dont go anywhere without having talked to some actual employees.

this this a million times this.

Sounds like one of the many, many, pyramid schemes out there.
I wouldn't bother with it.

This. No legitimate company is going to hire you just because you sent in a resume.

A few years ago, my friend posted his resume on Monster. He got an email from a company wanting to hire him as a "manager." My friend has a big ego and assumed it was because he had a 4.0 in his MIS program at UoP (yes, I can hear the laughing). I told him it was a scam and to be careful. With his huge ego though, he was convinced he was a hot commodity so he was a perfect target for these guys.

It was a scam. They call people like that and then tell you to meet with them. Well, little do you know, when you go to the "meeting," you'll find yourself in a room with dozens of other "managers" that they're hiring. That's when they hit you with the "startup fees" and tell you about recruiting other people to "work under you."

What is it that they are selling?

If they ask you to front ANY fees, RUN away. No job would ask you to pay for stuff. They pay you to work.

Koing

Those are money laundering positions.

The sales will send you paper payments and you are to take your commission and send forward the rest.

Paper payments are fraudulent - they will never come USPS.

when those types of jobs show up - send a email back to the company asking for some more details about the company itself. You will never hear back

Like others have said, this "AE" position sounds like a joke of a job. As I said though I have had ACTUAL "AE" jobs that have had incredible base pay, incredible commission and bonuses etc etc. Some were cold sales (not door-to-door, this was within corporations and vertical markets etc etc).

This one though... puke. Did you get the number to submit your resume off some sign stuck into the median of the road or tacked to the light post corner? "EARN BIG MONEY!!! WORK PART TIME!!! CALL NOW!!!"

do you want to know how to make $$$$ as an account executive, working FROM HOME, using The INTERNET? FREE INFORMATION - paypal me only $20 for shipping

I have been a wholesale mortgage account executive, and it wasnt that bad. The money was insane for a 22 year old. Average age in my position was 30s+

Really, like everyone else has mentioned, it just depends. Sometimes it is just euphamism for non-salaried salesperson. Think Cutco knives.
