Harvard says you should take a multi vitamin.

It isn't really very hard to get all your vitamins and minerals if you put some time and thought into it..

But then you have to follow through. How hard is it to swallow a little pill anyway just to be sure?

Well I know my ancestors didn't need to buy a 15$ bottle of vitamins to stay healthy. I will stick with the tried and true healthy diet thanks.

Over the past 100 years, great strides have been made in improving the health of people the world over. In the United States, for example, life expectancy has increased by about 25 years for men and 30 years for women, largely due to scientific advances that have helped prevent and treat many serious diseases.

I've started taking multivitamins for the past two weeks, and I realize how much I had been missing. I used to take them, stopped for a while, and started back up. I've been taking Trader Joe's house brand Trader Darwin's recently; $6.99 for 3mo worth. Nice. 😀

That isn't the point. The pill doesen't have everything you need, just the basics. And it isn't optmized for absorbtion; you need certain ammounts of one vitamin/mineral to be able to absorb other vitamins/minerals. Ever notice that your urine is bright yellow after you take a suppliment with B vitamins in it?

You're pissing your money down the toilet.

Many of your ancestors died from mear scratches which became infected.

Skoorb, you neglect to ask if Grey is he/she is an American Indian, if that's the case, do you think they were involved in the study? 😕

glen, pardon my ignorance, but what are "mear scratches?" 😕

Yeah but your/our ancestors died at a way earlier age than we do now. So maybe vitamins are the way to go?

I wasn't aware that anti-biotics were multivitamin pills now, don't see how they could help me with a mear scratch :Q . And the last time I took a health course the professor said multivitamins were a waste of money because the body did not need most of the ingredients. Most nutrients are micro-nutrients only needed in small quantities that any good diet should provide. The macro nutrients like calcium, C and A were also provided by a good diet.

Well according to the Harvard school of public health your professor is wrong.

rossmanI take one a day because it's the cheapest, but if I cared more I've heard good things about GNC's megaman!

Before this thread gets too far along I thought I would repost something I put in another vitamin thread some time ago.....

All vitamins are NOT the same. Most of the brands you will find at places like Wal-Mart, Target, etc.... are not very high quality. Remember, the supplement industry is NOT regulated by the FDA so they can pretty much do what they want. Many do not actually contain the amount of vitamins or minerals that they say they do. Even worse some have many times more of certain things in them than they are supposed to. For example I read a report recently about "one of the major brands" having 250% more vitamin A in it than it is supposed to. Doesn't sound bad does it? Well it is. Too much vitamin A is bad for your liver. Of the store brands that you will find in places like Wal-Mart, etc.. the brand Nature Made is the best. They are very high quality and are accurate in their labeling content. No, I don't work for that company, I've just read several reports and belong to a site sort of like Consumer Reports that tests supplements. If you really want good vitamins go to the aarp pharmacy and order from there. You will be better off buying something like their Gold Label series multivitamin. I take the U.S. RDA Formula Without Iron Caplets listed on that page and then just bought some natural Vitamin E and some selenium from them as well. Remember that men do not need to take a supplement with iron since we get enough of that and getting too much is bad.

Here is a list of what I take daily:

AARP Pharmacy - U.S. RDA Formula without Iron Caplets 1 per day
AARP Pharmacy - Vitamin E (Natural) 400 I.U. 1 per day
AARP Pharmacy - Selenium 50 mcg Tablets 1 per day
AARP Pharmacy - Lycopene 2 per day
Nature Made - Vitamin C 500mg 4 times a day. You can't take too much C. Your body just flushes out what it can't use.
KAL - M.S.M. with Glucosamine Sulfate 2 per day
MycoMedicinals - Maitake Mushroom 2 per day
Garlinase - Garlinase 4000 1 per day
Solgar - Calcium Citratewith Vitamin D Tablets 2 per day. Label says 4 per day but that's really too much
Solgar - Chelated Copper 1 per day
Solgar - Advanced Acidophilus Plus Complex 2 per day
GNC - Coenzyme Q-10 30mg 3 per day or you can take the AARP version 1 per day. I'm going to swtich to the AARP version when my GNC runs out.

That may look like a lot but it isn't really. Also you can purchase from the AARP Pharmacy without being a member. Heck I'm only 32 and I use them. Found out about their stuff through the site that tests supplements. They have the added bonus of also being cheaper than most other places.

Skoorb - You read my mind.

I bought One a Day from CostCo because I liked the packaging (dumb I know) and it came with a free something medicine something.

I've also heard good things about GNC's Megaman as well. Maybe I'll gradually move to that in the future.

For now, a multi vitamin for me is better than nothing.

I take a multi-vit every day, and drink about a gallon of water daily.

I've had one cold in the past 2 years and it lasted a day. No other illnesses.

shinerburkeMy god you take C on 4 seperate occasions EACH day? that must be a pain 😉 Back when I knew more about this stuff I would take my self-prescribed stuff in the mornings and then some more at night. I think I was taking a multi, extra C, and then A, E, and a couple of seperate minerals on top of that but even then I found it a bit of a pain.

One things for sure you ain't getting scurvy anytime soon :Q

It's not really that big of a pain. One in the morning, one at lunch, one when I get home, then one before I go to bed. Been considering cutting back to twice a day now that cold & flu season is winding down.

One thing I wish more people would think about before they start taking supplements is that they are all not created equal. Some of the most expensive brands turn out to be crap. It's funny but the AARP brand is consistently better than most of the trendy brands, GNC for example, in both quality and label accuracy.

OT..kinda:

Visited the campus when I was up in Boston....

Harvard is NOT that impressive. Yea, some buildings are cool looking..but overall..it's really just like any other college.

Or maybe we were just too cold to appreciate the "wonder" of an Ivy League.

Yep....and I'm healthy as a horse. Really started on this kick after I had some strange heart problems a little more than a year ago. I decided to start taking better care of myself and as part of that I began doing research on vitamins/supplements and which ones you truly needed, how much, and which were the best kinds. Of course people also need to remember that just because they are taking a pill they shouldn't forgo exercise of some sort. Since I began regime I have felt better than I have in years, have not been sick(I work at a hospital and in the past caught everything that came through the place), and must say that it has been well worth the effort and minor addition expense.
