Harsh Prison Terms for Chinese "Entertainers"

Hi,

Just read this. I've had various foreign people talk to me about it who've read about it in different languages - so I assume it is true. Talk about harsh!

The trial relating to a group of 200 Japanese tourists who cavorted with Chinese prostitutes ended in Zhuhai Wednesday, with two Chinese defendants sentenced to life imprisonment.

According to the verdict of the Zhuhai Intermediate People's Court, another 12 defendants were sentenced to prison terms of between two to 15 years for organizing prostitution or assisting the organization of the orgy.

The Chinese police have also requested Interpol to help locate three Japanese citizens, Hirobe Isao, Takahashi Shunji and Fukunaga Koji, who were accused of soliciting and organizing prostitution for their 200-plus work mates

The three-day party, allegedly involving hundreds of Chinese prostitutes, ended on Sept. 18, and triggered wide anger among the Chinese public as it coincided with the sensitive anniversary date of a 1931 Japanese attack on Northeast China, an event marking the start of Japan's invasion and occupation of China.

Obviously bad timing and somewhat illegal. But life imprisonment!

Wow. Never heard of prositution of being a pimp carrying a life sentence before. You'd *think* the police would notice 200+ prostitutes decending on a hotel and maybe put a stop to it - especially if it lasted 3 days!

Moral: Don't go to a party arranged by Japanese businessmen ;)

Cheers,

Andy

Since only 2 out of all of them received life imprisonment, I'm going to assume they may have addition charges against them. Then again, this is China, where the judicial system isn't known for it's open-hearted actions

What - like selling alcohol without a license ;)

I hope it was a good party. It'll be the last fun they'll have in a while.

I don't think China has any prison terms that are not "harsh" - the nail that sticks up will be pounded down.

US has some pretty harsh drug laws & some pretty weak white collar penalties. Then there's 3-strikes out here in CA, but that's a whole other thread.

Heard this story several days ago.

To understand the "harsh" sentencing, one should read up on 20C Sino-Japanese and Korean-Japanese history, the Rape of Nanking and the plight of "comfort women" during the Japanese occupation of that part of Asia.

Given the above, the sentences were not unreasonable.

They will be in prison long enough to wish they were dead. China and Korea have a
justification for their hostility toward the Japanese government. Eye opening books I've
recently read.

The Rape of Nanking/Iris Chang

The Comfort Women/Geo.L. Hicks

Hirohito and The Making of Modern Japan/?/ Won a Pulitzer

Embracing Defeat/John Dower

they've given death sentences for stealing bikes so don't be surprised. so who knows, maybe walmart saves lives by providing jobs over there and keeping riff raff off the streets all for pennies a day at twelve billion a month

u can bet they're blaring our recent "male nurse who killed 40+ patients" on their national media while they keep hush about the guy who murdered several dozen families with a pocket knife, or that restaurant owner that poisoned 40+ children to death of a rival restaurant. both were sentenced to death, organs probably harvested, the general populace is none the wiser, because only western culture has violence...

The sentence/system is not so bad given that current Chinese people/culture is so screwed up thanks to the cultural revolution. All the traditional teaching was thrown out of the window, people only understand money and power. Maybe the laws can help keeping the people straight while the school system re-educate people about values.

You have 1 Billion + people try being a nice guy to all of them and still keep things in order and not let society break down into chaos.

revenge isn't a good reason.

prostitution in many areas in china are mostly ignored by police.

I know some of that history too - it is truly awful. I don't however see how it lends itself to life or 12 -15 years imprisonment. Now, if it was done against the will of the "prostitute" then they may have a case, but I think everyone was a willing participant.

Cheers,

Andy
