I've been surfing a bit on Rotten Tomatoes and I saw the new Harry Potter movie. I got curious and took a look at the past movies, only to see that the scores were all above 75% (most above 85).

Are all the movies really THAT good?

The new one currently has 89%, but is on a downward trend.

I know one should not look only at the overall scores judgment but still... these are pretty good scores nonetheless..

They are ok. Books are better, of course, but the movies aren't bad where they stick to the book.

The first movie(s) sucked real bad. It's almost unbearable.

Well, it does seem the movies got better through the series. I kept wincing at every scene when the first one came out, same for second and third. Once I got past the "they are straying way too much from the book, and doing it poorly" mentality, I thought the second movie (chamber of secrets) and third movie (prisoner of azkaban) were okay. The previous movie (order of the phoenix) was best so far, imo. I think the acting was getting better, and I liked who they picked for Luna.

I think they are pretty good. They aren't mind-blowingly awesome, but they are most definitely entertaining. The make-up, wardrobe, setting, lighting, and CG is all usually done pretty well.

If you haven't watched any of them, I would recommend renting the first one. There are far worse movies out there to waste your time on.

This one was the first one I actually liked and didn't feel like I was watching a kid's movie.

I loved the movies. I haven't read the books, so plot failings didn't affect me. I like the magic and surrealism of daily life at Hoggwarts, and the movies are just a fun way for me to escape for a little while :^)

Are these movies superior to LOTR, or Spider-Man or the Matrix.... or Ocean's or Bourne?

I know it seems silly to compare such different genres, but in terms of quality, do the scores truly reflect the quality of the movies... or are the scores overrated!?

I am not really interested in seeing them, though (thanks for the advice, anyway). I was just astonished by their scores on RT.

No to LOTR (not even a fair comparison), yes to Spider-Man (never got the hype over the first movie, nor the second, and didn't even bother watching the third), yes to 2nd/3rd Matrix movies (but first one was golden), yes to Ocean's (overrated), no to Bourne (awesome acting, plot, cinematography, music...everything).

Those are somewhat silly comparisons. Fundamentally they are a different genera; i.e. kids fantasy movies. The themes and humor are phenomenally different.

For kicks, though, I do think the LoTR trilogy were far superior movies - among my most favorite movies ever. However due to the length and dialogue in LoTR I think the Harry Potter flicks have a better "rewatchability" than any of the LoTR movies.

Compared to the rest of the movie series you cited, I do think the Harry Potter flicks are relatively "better."

I haven't watched any of the movies, but the latest one looks real explosiony. Plus Emma Watson's legal now, so maybe she'll flash her snatch.

the quality of acting improves every movie, as it should considering the actors are getting older and more experienced

The first few seem to follow the story better, but I think the movies get more entertaining as the series go on.

You kinda lost the plot for more entertainment, from what I've felt. Eh.

I still love them lol.

One example I can think of off the top of my head in in Order of the Phoenix when the Weasley twins were making their.....grand departure from Hogwarts.

That was awesome :D
