Whats the 1st Harry Potter movie? Is it Chamber of Secrets?

If so, I assume you must have read the books to understand what happened beforehand?

The first Harry Potter is The Sorcerer's Stone.

edit: I saw the first three movies before reading the books. The most recent movie I read all of the books before watching.

IIRC, The Sorcer's stone is based on the first book of the series (the Philosopher's stone as originally released), so, you WILL have to read the books to get further information...

You can watch the movies w/o reading the books, but the books are far better. Just make sure you watch them in order.

I have not read any of the books but thoroughly enjoy the movies: sorcerer's stone, chamber of secrets, prisoner of azkaban, goblet of fire. That's the order.

I watched the first movie before reading the books. It actually worked out nicely because while I read the books, the characters and locales that I pictured would match what was shown in the films.
