Harper to take credit for the benefits Canada has derived from policies that he consistently opposed his entire career

OTTAWA ? Stephen Harper is headed to car country and he's coming with a buoyant message at a bleak time.

The prime minister will be in Brampton, Ont. on Tuesday to deliver his first major speech of 2009 on the state of the economy.

Mr. Harper rarely writes his own addresses from scratch but he spent the weekend at his residence putting this one together.

The 3,000-word speech will contrast Canada's situation with the far worse struggles being confronted in other countries.
Prime Minister Stephen Harper listens to questions from the media during a visit to Berwick, N.S., on Friday.

Mr. Harper will also argue that smart government decisions, on bank regulation and tax cuts, have helped soften the economic blow.

The Prime Minister will illustrate his case with visual aids: his speech to the Brampton Board of Trade will include a slide show of Power Point charts.

Officials in the Prime Minister's Office say the speech locale was chosen because southern Ontario's manufacturing sector has been particularly hard-hit by the current recession.

Brampton has a Chrysler plant that employs 3,500 people. Although it remains open, the plant was recently idled for a week.

I thought I'd replace the article's title with a factual one. I wonder if, instead of piggy-backing on successful Liberal policies, he'll bring up his own record?

- allowing the absurd 40 year mortgages
- telling people in september that its a good time to buy stocks (how has the market done since then?)
- bring up his incredible precience during the election campaign about how there "might" be a "technical recession"

Harper is the worst type of politician there is - excellent at politicking, horrible at governing.

Sounds like the best type ;)

They had those? I didn't even know they existed in the US.
- telling people in september that its a good time to buy stocks (how has the market done since then?)
Oops. Oh, sorry, it's a great "long term" investment, even if it's subsequently fallen by 30%

When did he say that?

Anyway, despite Canada being better off than some, I cannot imagine the "well, it sucks more for them" is going to go down particularly well in Southern Ontario, which is leading the charge on seeing unemployment shoot up hugely in Canada.

10-4

The same douche-bag also is touting how the Canadian banking system was not deregulated, while it was him and his cronies who put intense pressure on former PM Martin to do so.

I wish the "Conservative party" was actually conservative. They are more left than the dems. Not to mention they have yet to do anything but attempt to consolidate power being happy to allow the US to "prop up the North America Economy".

I don't think any other party would do much better but they are truly failing.

They are a conservative party by the standards of the rest of the world. The political spectrum of the two parties in the US is heavily shifted to the right when you compare us to most other democracies.

If they were Right of the Dems, they would never get Elected in Canada...except possibly in Alberta.

Harper is really quite transparent. Whatever he says, just assume the Opposite. If he criticizes a Liberal Policy during a Campaign, it's fairly safe to assume he'll implement that policy if he Wins. Even when he keeps a promise, he manages to break it somehow. Martin is 100% correct, Harper doesn't know when to stop playing Politics and start Governing.
