Harmony remotes & PS3

Hi all,

I'm looking to nab a Harmony remote (I'm up to 6 remotes...) and I'm unsure which one to get.

My devices: XBox, PS3, TV, Receiver, cable box, Zune

Now, it looks like the 900 has extra buttons - are these needed? I understand I'll need the PS3 add on (and will likely wait to get it since I have the bluetooth remote already) but I want to make sure I only need to buy one remote to do it all.

Thanks!
RA

Get RF if you have a cabinet. You will still need to use a RF->IR converter (which may or may not come with the remote) to control devices (simply having a RF remote will not suddenly make all your devices RF). The main idea with RF is for controlling devices that are in a cabinet/closet/another room. Line of sight is just as easy to deal with using IR repeaters.

RF is nice, if you anticipate needing it. i.e. controlling an HTPC. That said, the 900 supports up to 15 devices which is far more than youre needing. You may be better off getting something like the 650 or maybe the One, then later if you need RF get something like THIS. The thing I dont like about the 900 is the activity buttons are the touch screen itself, as opposed to cooresponding hard buttons which you can puch by touch. It may be a non issue for you though.

get a logitech harmony link and turn any android or ios wifi device into your remote 😛
i recommend this since my harmony's off button decided to die making it a PITA to use 🙁

note: this is only a good option if you have or plan to get an android or ios smart phone or tablet

I was considering this...but the reviews for the iOS app are universally terrible. Moreover, my iPad and iPhone aren't always glued to me. My iPhone has work email on it, and this is pinlocked, and I don't want to turn on my iPad every time I want to change the volume. I think a physical remote is likely a better option for me...as awesome as having a TV guide built into a remote sounds.

I hate touchscreens for controllers. Think it's a terrible idea. I don't want to have to look at my remote to use it.

I really wish they'd make a more traditional Harmony with built in Bluetooth and IR support.

I'm really surprised it hasn't happened yet. IMO bluetooth remote control is superior to IR, of course RF is much more prevalent.

What's wrong with the 890 or 900, other than the cost?
